Fight crime, vote Blue.
Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia — don’t call him Trumpkin — is demonstrating his business acumen by continuing to gum up the works of our upcoming election. The favored tactic is to stave off the surge in registrations inspired by the Supreme Court ‘Dobbs’ decision blowing up Roe v. Wade. Delay in processing registration has several impacts that hurt Democrats more than Republicans.
The surge is clearly inspired by Dobbs, meaning it is due to likely Democratic voters, so delay in processing is not a neutral type of misfeasance.
Their other trick is sending voters incorrect information on where they need to go and vote. Voters in the Democratic counties of Fairfax and Prince William.
An unprocessed registration can lead to voters showing up at the polls to find out their names are not on the rolls. It will be possible to fix this on-site, so I caution voters to show up in any case, but at the very least the effect will be to lengthen wait times and erode vote totals.
Another impact, both parties use registration data to mobilize voters. Holes in the data stemming from the registration surge do not have a neutral impact.
To give you an idea of the scale involved, last year Youngkin got elected governor by a margin of fewer than 64,000 votes — less than two percent of the total. The backlog in processing registration applications as of today is 256,000.
If you’ve been following this state’s political shitshow, you know the Republicans flipped the offices of governor, attorney-general, and lieutenant governor last year by very narrow margins. Their campaign was based on groundless moral panics over Critical Race Theory and transgender bathroom phobia.
I have to wonder about what voters think, after a year where nothing has happened with regard to those issues. Do they wonder, “What was that about?” It’s kind of like Trump in 2016, babbling about infrastructure, and failing to provide any over the course of his four-year term, when he had majorities in Congress.
Democrats can ill afford to lose support in any purple state, so supporting Democratic efforts in Virginia has national import. It’s not too late to throw them a few bucks.
