Republicans have no message discipline. They lie, talk crazy and contradict themselves constantly. [1]

Which Republican best represents the point? They all do. Take their leadership (please). T*p changes his excuses for inciting insurrection, stealing documents and committing other crimes constantly, despite legal advice. McConnell and McCarthy can’t decide if they believe that the building they work in should be defended or if Democracy is good.

Senators like Marco Rubio, who demanded disqualification and criminal charges for Hillary’s email, say T*p’s document buffet is “a storage issue”. Senate candidate Oz doesn’t know what state he’s trying to represent. Senate candidate Walker thinks his badge allows him to force women he impregnates to get abortions and all others not. Blake Masters literally erased his anti-abortion positions from his web site after Dobbs. Don Bolduc reversed his position on election fraud less than 36 hours after winning the primary, but recently re-invented ‘bus loads of illegal voters’ to win T*p’s endorsement. JD Vance thinks Ukraine is “a tragedy” that he also “doesn’t care about”.

And the House is worse. Lauren Boebert is happy when anything is going badly, because it’s proof that she’s bringing about the end times and the second coming of Jesus. MT Greene believes in Jewish Space Lasers and wants to slaughter Democrats like feral hogs. Paul Gosar defended tweeting an anime video showing the slaughter of Democrats, showing that he has no comprehension of how violent images and rhetoric threaten the lives of Congresspeople and their families.

And don’t tell me that their media is any better. Fox News has attacked Mr Potatohead, Elmo, one of the M&M’s, a mermaid, and has promoted exposing yourself to superchargers. Their hypocrisy over criticizing Democrats for anything while whitewashing egregious acts by Republicans gives job security to the Daily Show comic staff. Fox views on the same issues change completely depending on which party holds power. Steve Bannon said the Republican media strategy is “to flood the zone with s#it”. That’s not a consistent message. That’s making up s#it to prevent anyone else from getting out a consistent message.

However imperfect our messaging, however much we wish our points broke through more, and however frustrating it is when a hateful lie gets a million more views than our reasoned arguments, do not be deceived: our messaging is infinitely better than theirs. Joe Biden may gaffe, but at least he’s trying to tell the truth. They’re not. Democratic accomplishments may be underreported, but at least we have a lot to speak about proudly. They don’t. Republicans have used lies to frighten Americans to stampede towards treacherous ground, but nobody wants to end up where they’re pushing us. Like most Americans, we want to build a better future. Republicans won’t get us there. We must. And we will. Our messaging is always better, because it’s honest, smarter and moral. We just need to keep it up.

So can we please stop with the “oh, Republicans are so great at messaging” and “Democrats should just complain quietly under our breath” crap that some overly-anxious worrywarts post here daily? Lying about everything everywhere all at once is bad, and we should not copy that. Promoting hateful conspiracy theories is dangerous, and toning down our responses or compromising with crazy is wrong. Self-censoring our strongest moral stances out of fear that stupid bigots will continue acting up, won’t help us win hearts & minds. If anything, now is the time to GET LOUD telling the truth. Next week may be too late.

Sure, we should make our points clearer, use shorter words & sentences. Yes, we need to repeat the truth, point out reality repeatedly, and also make the plain truth clear again and again. Many Americans don’t speak English too good, so simple stories work best. ¾ of Americans are below average at math, so keep it simple. It can be hard work taking a complicated truth and putting it simply, but that’s the job. When we water down the truth, it just makes the job harder. And most importantly, we should keep repeating the truth as often as possible, even more often than they lie. So do what my I wish my Mom had told me on my first day of school: be brave, tell the truth and try your best to get it right.
