Most notably, violent crime went up to its peak during the Reagan-Bush years.

Injustice

I had hoped to cover some recent stories about the injustices in the bail system, the War on Drugs, and racism in policing, courts, and prisons, but I had too much else to cover for today. We’ll get there. Feel free to add instances in the comments.

Elections

Brazil

Bolsonaro promises transition to Lula government, but does not concede. He couldn’t organize a coup.

x There was some qualifying language Bolsonaro used in his presser not included in this report that still makes me skeptical, but it seems, like Trump, he simply doesn’t have support within the military & with senior govt officials to try anything too crazy. The Environment

COP27 is already a failure. There is no public discussion of what investments are needed, nor of their cost. Nations are in disarray, and there has been no consensus-building on meaningful goals.

TL;DR We need to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 5% to 7% a year, requiring an investment on the order of several trillion dollars a year.

Switching The World To Renewable Energy Will Cost $62 Trillion, But The Payback Would Take Just 6 Years

Mark Jacobson and his colleagues at Stanford University have published a new study in the journal Energy & Environmental Science that claims 145 of the world’s nations could switch to 100% renewable energy in a few years using renewable energy technologies available today. They recommend the world make the switchover by 2035, but in no event later than 2050. Their goal is to have 80% operating on renewable energy by 2030. The researchers say switching to renewable energy would avoid utility grid blackouts and save consumers trillions of dollars. One of the main reasons for that finding is that the combustion-based energy systems most countries rely require a lot of energy just to function. In switching to a clean, renewable energy system, Jacobson states that worldwide energy usage would go down by 56% immediately.

Energy Environ. Sci., 2022, 15, 3343

Low-cost solutions to global warming, air pollution, and energy insecurity for 145 countries

If the second timeline (80% by 2030 and 100% by 2050) is met, and if 80% and 100% of 2020 non-energy emissions are also eliminated by 2030 and 2050, respectively, then about 340 billion additional tonnes of CO 2 will accumulate in the air by 2050. Accordingly, such a transition timeline will avoid 1.5 ℃ warming because it will result in less than the 500 billion tonne accumulated-CO 2 emission allowance. To reduce climate damage further and to reduce the enormous loss of life from air pollution and the dangers due to energy insecurity, a 2035 timeline for a complete transition is also proposed. Individual regional capital costs range from $2.8 billion for Iceland to $13.3 trillion for the China region. The cost to the U.S. is $6.7 trillion, and the cost for Europe is $5.9 trillion. The proposed annual outlay of capital follows the same trajectory as the proposed pace of transition shown in Fig. 1, namely 80% by 2030 and 100% by 2035 or 2050.

Simplistically, $6.7 trillion over the next eight years would be about $800 billion/yr, requiring a huge rampup in the next Congress and in US industry and private finance. I remind you that this is a call for very profitable investment, saving real money, real lives, and the real planet.

After election day, as COP27 continues, and the counting gradually winds down and we prepare for various runoffs, I should be able to go into much more detail on all of this, including needed investment by country, costs of remediation for damage done, a comparison with current investment levels, and some political analysis. Actually, not just me, but our whole corps of DK climate activists, likely cheered on by Meteor Blades, Staff Emeritus since his retirement, but still quite active.

So then we can talk about what pledges are needed from various countries on their own account and to assist poor countries, and how to educate their leaders and their populations on all of it. I know a few of the people in the business, and I know where to find the rest of them. I have also costed out the investment needed to end all of poverty and nearly all oppression worldwide, drawing on my experience as a high-tech market analyst.

Compare the above with this bushwah.

COP27 must deliver on existing promises, says Egypt's climate diplomat

Mohamed Nasr, Egypt’s chief climate negotiator, tells New Scientist that COP27 will focus on making sure existing promises are kept, rather than extracting new pledges

x The climate conference #COP27 kicks off at the end of this week.

Scientists warn that if the world is to have a chance of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and so prevent the breaching of the 1.5C limit, global emissions will have to be cut by 5% to 7% a year. At present, emissions are rising between 1% and 2% a year with little sign of that increase being halted.

Climate damages will dominate UN summit

COP27 is supposed to be the "implementation summit," where pledges on everything from reducing deforestation to boosting funding for adaptation, climate mitigation and cutting methane emissions are turned into actions. Developing countries, which at COP27 will be led by flood-ravaged Pakistan, have signaled that they will push hard for a financing "mechanism" for loss and damage.

This compensation is supposed to address impacts that were caused mainly by emissions from industrialized nations, and that are beyond poorer countries' capacity to adapt.

x 🌎 🚨 With the planet on track for nearly 3ºC of warming by 2100, #COP27 will be a critical test of world leaders' abilities to unite and prevent the worst impacts of climate change.

Climate warnings highlight the urgent need for action ahead of COP27 As Egypt prepares to host the next UN climate summit, a series of reports illustrate how much further countries must go to avoid catastrophic global warming. Atmospheric CO₂ , responsible for about 66 per cent of global warming since 1750, hit 415.5 parts per million in 2021, the WMO said. Meanwhile, methane registered the largest single-year increase since researchers started keeping records 40 years ago. An assessment by an international coalition of scientists of 35 “planetary vital signs”, such as ocean acidification, deforestation rates and Arctic sea ice loss, found that 16 are at record extremes and are “flashing red” on the climate dashboard. The results prompted the team to warn that humanity is “unequivocally facing a climate emergency”. The plans countries have drawn up would see carbon emissions fall by 3.6 per cent by 2030 compared with 2019 levels, according to an analysis by the UN’s climate change secretariat published on 26 October. That is well below the 43 per cent drop needed to meet the 1.5°C temperature target set out in the Paris Agreement. Even if efforts to phase out fossil fuels aren’t stepped up, demand for coal will start declining within a few years and oil demand will level off by 2035, according to the IEA’s latest World Energy Outlook analysis. Crucially, even gas demand is forecast to plateau from the end of this decade. A peak in fossil fuel use would mark a historic turning point for the global economy, finally uncoupling GDP and fossil fuel use for the first time since the industrial revolution. It also spells good news for the climate: global emissions from the energy sector are now forecast to peak by 2025 as a result of slowing demand, the IEA has said.
