Elon Musk: From Visionary to Reactionary & a Grim Prediction [1]

I was a huge admirer of Elon Musk for years. Musk is credited with the rise of Tesla, the pioneer of the electric car industry. He constructed the largest solar farm in the country in California. He even gave away cutting edge solar technology to India to secure India’s signature on the Paris Climate Accords of 2016. He founded and heads SpaceX, the preeminent priviate space travel corporation with the largest NASA contracts.

How does a person evolve from environmental visionary and most renowned and influential living scientist in the world to political reactionary and right wing conspiracy theorist in just a few years? I’m not sure, but I observed his tweets as the Covid crisis unfolded, railing against government meddling in businesses, affecting his bottom line in Tesla corporation and threatening his SpaceX endeavors. While I disagreed with his perspective on Covid, I felt I understood where he was coming from as a businessman and high stakes entrepreneur.

I do know that I became truly alarmed when he announced his intention to acquire Twitter and specifically to allow Donald Trump back on the platform. Truly disillusioned at that point, I resolved to close my Twitter account if he followed through, and I did.

Just two days ago as I write this, Musk posted a link to a malicious homophobic conspiracy theory involving the violent attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi. He took down the tweet in short order for unclear reasons. What is clear is that his tweet was a petty, tit for tat response to Hillary Clinton’s tweet in support of the Pelosis. And he had added this teaser: “There is a tiny possibility there might be more to this story than meets the eye”.

Today has brought to me the strong sense of an epiphany, an inevitability on where all this is heading. Musk is doing a deep dive into right wing politics. The heir apparent and chief rival to Trump’s political empire is not Ron DeSantis, Don, Jr., or anyone else who’s been on the collective radar. It’s Elon Musk.
