Welcome to the Street Prophets Coffee Hour.

I'm not really a great fan of horror movies. Endless splashing of fake gore and wooden acting bore me; in a quarrel between obnoxious teenagers being stupid out in the woods and the understandably annoyed local monster or cannibal, I'll be rooting for the monster or cannibal.

But I do like the films of Guillermo del Toro. I like the stories, the acting, the costumes, the special effects, the sets, the music, the direction. Everything. I haven't seen all of his films, but I really enjoyed Hellboy, Crimson Peak, Mimic, and The Shape of Water. Pan's Labyrinth is my favorite. In truth, it's one of my favorite films, period.

I've been reading the tarot for thirty-odd years. And like many readers I own several different decks. There's the deck I use for everyday readings (Hanson-Roberts), a beautiful deck I use for images in meditation and ritual (the Ethereal Visions deck), a whimsical deck (the Cat Tarot), and now something new. A little darker. A little different. Hypnotic and mysterious, strange and beautiful. (Rather like del Toro's films) I bought my copy of Tarot del Toro at Game On in Cottonwood, AZ. I imagine it could be found at bookstores and metaphysical shops. It's also available on Amazon.

The LWB (little white book) that comes with this deck includes a foreword by Guillermo del Toro; his mom was a tarot reader. Divination is something he grew up with. The book itself, written and illustrated by Tomas Hijo, offers a discussion about the symbolism and meanings of each card. As well as information about the film or graphic novel character or scene depicted on each card, and why that particular character or scene was chosen. The woodcut illustrations are simply gorgeous. The cards, book, and box are all made of smooth, high-quality heavy cardstock.

The box and LWB. The box is embossed and very decorative. The book is 87 pages long.

The box is gorgeous and a keepsake in it's own right.

A look at some of the Major Arcana cards-

The Fool, The Magician, and The World. Guillermo del Toro himself appears as The Magician.

The Star, The Tower, and Temperance.

The Moon, The Hermit, and Justice. I find this depiction of Justice especially compelling.

In this deck the Minor Arcana are called Blades, Wands, Goblets and Discs-

The Ace, Five, and Knight of Blades.

The Ace, Queen, and King of Wands. The suit of Wands is particularly beautiful.

The Ace, Two, and Knight of Goblets.

The Ace, Four, and Valet of Discs.

Tarot del Toro, written and illustrated by Tomas Hijo, foreword by Guillermo del Toro. Insight Editions, 2020. ISBN 978-1-68383-979-8. insighteditions.com

I haven't yet used this deck as I'm still getting acquainted with it. That's a process that takes as long as it needs to; it can't and shouldn't be rushed. I hope you enjoyed seeing this deck as much as I enjoyed sharing it with you.

Thank you for reading. This is an open thread, all topics are welcome.
