Christian Zionism: the elephant-in-the-room [1]

For several years now, and as a (Christian) supporter of Jewish Voice for Peace, I have ridiculed those who have insisted that “anti-Zionism is antisemitism”. Not all Jews are Zionists and the majority of Zionists are CHRISTIAN, so how can that be?

The role of Christian Zionism in the “conflict” between Israeli Jews and the Palestinian people is usually understated — if it is stated at all. What is this “conflict” between one of the world’s best-drilled and most sophisticated army, navy, air-force and intelligence operations and a largely civilian population, some of whom have managed to smuggle in a few modern arms to add to a largely ineffective arsenal of home-made rockets? Looked at dispassionately, the 1948 “Nabka” (or catastrophe), which led to the foundation of the Israeli State and led to the driving of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes never to return, could reasonably be called an act of ethnic cleansing. A similar (creeping) process has been taking place since the 1967 pre-emptive strike by Israel on its Arab neighbours, catching them with their pants round their ankles and hardly meriting the epithet of “war”. The result of this was the occupation and (illegal) colonisation of Palestinian territory — regarded as a state by many international organisations within the “Green Line” that delineated the original extent of Israel by the UN.

In the West Bank, the establishment of hundreds of illegal “outposts”, colonies and associated infrastructure has seen many Palestinians driven from their homes. Palestinian homes, schools, clinics, animal enclosures, tents have been demolished while similar (illegal) Jewish structures have been encouraged. What is this if not ethnic cleansing? Foreign and Israeli volunteers and even T’ruah rabbis for human rights, have been attacked while monitoring the destruction of Palestinian crops and attacks by so-called “settlers”. (Witnesses to ethnic cleansing are not welcome!)

(US) Jewish Zionist support for the (illegal) colonisation of Palestine can be taken as read. There is much more numerous Christian Zionist / Evangelist support, (including Pres. Joe Biden, Trump’s VP, Mike Pence among many prominent politicians), for the billions of public and “charitable” US dollars going to Israel each year. These go directly and indirectly into funding the occupation and illegal colonisation of Palestine.

One would hope that devout Christians would consider how their Lord and Saviour would consider their treatment of the (essentially indigenous), Palestinian population. Calling this land “Judea and Samaria” cannot justify the Crimes Against Humanity of Apartheid and Ethnic Cleansing, but it seems that the prospect of seeing Jesus walking on earth throws all concerns to the wind for many Christian Zionists / Evangelicals. Such people need confronting with the evil that their support is unleashing on the Palestinian population, but as things are, not even CHRISTIAN Palestinians are exempt from violation of their human rights — rights which were enshrined in international law by the Universal Declaration on Human Rights after the experiences of Jews and other minorities at the hands of the Nazis before and during WWII.
