The current collection of Halloween birds and squishmallows!
Welcome to Halloween 2022! Even with Ghosts, Ghouls, London Lettuce and Sexy Matt Gaetz costumes (hey, there must be one out there somewhere, Spirit Halloween stores and the internet have everything!), I think the scariest thing I can think of is the next two years if we don’t do well in the midterms. If I wanted to scare the bejeesus out of my friends, I’d show up trick-or-treating as either Republican Voter or Sitting This One Out Person. Don’t be that person, and make sure everyone you know has a plan to vote by next Tuesday!
This will be my fourth Halloween Top Comments (2010, 2017 and 2020 were the prior three), and just like those, this is a music diary. So as not to repeat personal favorites for the third or (fourth) time, this is all new songs (although I LOVE my prior choices so go look at them too). To accomplish this, I enlisted K1’s help because I knew I’d get MANY suggestions, and so the first four are with grateful thanks.
This year’s list:
Haunted by Laura Les. One half of the duo 100 Gecs, Laura often uses pitched-up ‘nightcore-style’ vocals as one way to deal with the vocal dysphoria of being a transgender female singer.
My Girlfriend is a Witch by October Country. K1 and I roadtripped to western NY for their friend’s wedding (I got a lovely afternoon on Lake Canandaigua during that time!) and this was one of the songs we listened to.
ghost cowboys, by Louie Zong. Such an adorable little tune, and apparently he puts a new one out almost every year, plus LOTS of other cute fun music.
Season of the Witch by Donovan but this is the Lana Del Rey cover. Why? Because K1 said “this is my favorite version” and so maybe it will be yours, too.
I Put a Spell on You by Jalacy J. "Screamin' Jay" Hawkins. Thanks to wikipedia I now know that it was meant as a blues ballad, but everyone was trashed when the recording happened and this was the result.
She Wolf, by Shakira. Because what’s Halloween without werewolves?
Love Song for a Vampire by Annie Lennox. End credit song for the 1992 film Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
