I was doing my citizen bit showing up for early voting here in the blood red state of Tennessee, when what to my surprise popped up on the screen than an amendment to add language to our state constitution banning for all time and in all cases the institution of slavery. I spent a little more time than I normally would in these types of special propositions reading and rereading it to make sure it wasn’t a trick question of sorts, and I had not, for whatever reason, heard of this amendment before. I then voted “Yes”, somewhat dumbfounded that this really on the ballot.
Fast forward to today, and I read on the BBC news (US edition, natch) that five states have similar measures on the ballot. Driving by the early voting site, I noticed a number of “Vote No” signs in front of the mostly Republican tents. Voting in Tennessee is an exercise in futility, in that no matter how much interest in the election, or how heavy the voter turnout, the results are predictably the same, with Repubs locking in a 2 to 1 spread. Dems rarely draw more than 30% of the vote.
Still, this election will always be a special one for me. I actually got to vote to “eliminate” slavery in our state law. Can’t wait to see if it passes. And yes, I have heard the economic rationalizations and reformist arguments.
