The New York Times today:
Lula’s victory completes a stunning political revival for Mr. da Silva — from the presidency to prison and back — that had once seemed unthinkable. Brazil Ejects Bolsonaro and Brings Back Leftist Former Leader Lula
While some on the far right in the United States mourned the loss of Jair Bolsonaro, Trump’s Brazilian camarada and companheiro, others see hope for Lula’s path as a framework for TFG’s future in politics.
Of course, Trump is Jair’s role model on most policies:
policies that accelerated the destruction of the Amazon rainforest and exacerbated the pandemic, which left nearly 700,000 dead in Brazil, while also becoming a major international figure of the far right for his brash attacks on the left, the media and Brazil’s democratic institutions. More recently, his efforts to undermine Brazil’s election system drew particular concern at home and abroad, as well as worldwide attention to Sunday’s vote as an important test for one of the world’s largest democracies.
Yet as the former U.S. President faces advanced criminal investigations for, inter alia, seditious conspiracy, obstruction of justice, espionage, fraud, and election interference, many see Lula, TFG’s ideological opposite, as his role model for regaining power.
Fox News commentator and Brazil resident Glenn Greenwald, tweeted:
The shitlib leftist treatment of Jair Bolsonaro (whom I do not support) led to the election of ex-con Lula (whom I also do not support). Yet Lula’s journey from the heights to the depths and back again could be a boon to the future hopes of Donald Trump (whom I also do not support).
Times columnist Maureen Dowd writes:
Rio de Jair-No Though the right in Brazil and the U.S. is Blu about Bolso’s banishment, some Republicans here see hope for their hero based on Lula’s flight path from chefe to condenado back to chefe. Anything for the return of their beloved Macawdilho, TFG.
Big hat tip to the incomparable New York Times Pitchbot.
