When I was a lot younger and more dissolute than I am now, I used to buy tickets to Grateful Dead shows using their mail order service. This was, of course, before the Internet, and required following very exacting instructions that seemed quite intricate to someone in an (ahem) altered state of consciousness. But my motivation was very strong, and I took whatever time and made whatever effort was required to get it right. I never failed to get it right.
Fast forward 30 years. Today I filled out my Texas mail-in ballot (available for old and/or disabled folks only in this ridiculous state). The instructions are very exacting and intricate, no matter what shape your consciousness is in. But my motivation is, again, very strong, and despite Texas’ best efforts, I have never failed to get it right. Just another of the ways that my 50 years of experience as a Deadhead has helped me in “real” life.
