MAGA candidate, whose daughter hit her with a restraining order, lies about her number of marriages [1]

The party of family values has nominated a candidate for North Carolina's 1st congressional district who does not know how often she has been married. In an October 6 interview with local conservative radio host Henry Hinton, Sandy Smith complained about the “Soros media” and her “psychotic” ex-husband. She was particularly incensed by reports that featured the frequency of her trips down the aisle.
She exclaimed: “Last week, I was notified that I’d been married seven, 10 times!” In an unexpected move for a conservative, Hinton asked her for the truth. “How many times have you been married?” he asked. Smith replied, “three times.”
To their credit, the reporters at the Daily Beast investigated the truth of this statement. They dug up gold. The Republican congressional candidate’s current marriage to businessman William Smith and two earlier marriages—to Randall Auman Jr. from 1995 to 2001 and Eric Goranson from 2007 to 2010—have previously been reported. But Washington State family court records obtained by The Daily Beast reveal that Smith also married a man named Ken Davis on Dec. 23, 2003, then divorced him a year later.
Multiple marriages are, of course, a complete no-no among conservative Christians. However, I do not believe it makes much difference whether the number is three or four. And Smith does not appear to be at an age where dementia has kicked in. So why she chose to lie is unclear.
I have no idea what it is like to be married to Smith, but two of her husbands shared some information on the matter. Her first husband Auman told multiple North Carolina media outlets earlier this year that Smith once drove aggressively at him in his Ford Mustang although he was not sure whether she meant to scare him or run him over. He added that she liked to threaten to punch him and liked to swing a frying pan around.
Her third husband, Goranson, alleged in divorce filings that Smith bashed him in the face with an alarm clock in 2009. Predictably Smith has denied both claims.
I will grant you that aggrieved ex-spouses may not be the most dispassionate commentators. But the consistency of her exes lends credibility to their accounts of matrimony to the harridan. “I know the real Sandra,” said Randy Auman. “She’ll lie through her teeth.” Eric Goranson said, “I don’t trust a single thing that comes out of her mouth.” And now she is a MAGA Republican, so that cements the dishonesty claim.
There is more. In 2012, after an argument, Smith’s daughter then 17, sought a protective order against her mother alleging that she “held me down by my hair and punched me in the face with a closed fist.” In her request for the order, the daughter also said Smith called her a “slut, cunt, bitch, whore, tramp, loser, crackhead, trailer park trash, etc.” What a charmer.
A district court judge granted Smith’s daughter a temporary domestic violence protective order, ruling, “It clearly appears that there is a danger of acts of domestic violence against [Smith’s daughter].”
However, the daughter dropped the petition. And now Smith claims her daughter's boyfriend and his mother had coerced her into the application. I suppose it might be true. A statement she posted to her website quotes her daughter as saying, “My mom is NOT a domestic abuser; she is a survivor and a protector.” This past week, Smith tweeted a video of her daughter criticizing the “disgusting attacks on my mom and these horrific lies.”
In the video, the daughter, who is apparently an ex-marine, and photogenic, speaks glowingly of her mother. Nevertheless, the campaign will not allow anyone to talk to her. I am no politician, but if I had a child that was now 27, and willing to speak well of me, I would unloose them on the voters to rebut this scandal directly in person. So we will have to take the video with a grain of salt. And also disregard the supposed quote as hearsay.
Credit to Smith though. She won the GOP primary even though her opponent had publicized the domestic abuse charges against her. And the national Republicans were so terrified by her candidacy, Kevin Mccarthy spent $600,00 in support of her opponent, to no avail
As it stands, NC 1 leans Democratic. Unfortunately, liberals face electoral headwinds with Biden's plummeting popularity in North Carolina. Plus the 9-term incumbent G. K. Butterfield retired. So who knows? As we have seen since 2016, there is no evil that a GOP candidate can commit that is bad enough to dissuade the base from sending them to D.C.
