Trick...or treat (for a lot of us)
The above image was sent by a friend from church, who assured me it was free to “share,” although he did not know who the artist is. This is truly a work of art and it would be great if we could give proper credit where it is due.
Know that everyone here intends to vote, but also hope most of you are doing other things to GOTV as well.
Our church—in partnership with a local Community Action Program, ran a voter registration drive on September 20th (National Voter Registration Day). We were set up at a main County office and had “satellite” locations at two local Head Starts. The intent was to get low-income and under-represented communities registered. Happy to report that I handed out almost as many registration applications in Somali as in English.
Also just finished sending 100 letters through Vote Forward.
We have a number of signs in our yard for specific candidates—mostly city and local races. Some of the folks we know personally, so we were happy to let them put a sign out.
I also will be working the election on November 8th. Wrote a previous article about working the 2020 election here. These are long days—arriving at 6 am to set up for the polls to open at 7 am, working until the polls close at 8 pm, and then breaking down and packing up (the ballots are transported to a secure location to be counted). As much as we love to see lots of folks voting, in 2020 we barely had time to eat or skip to the loo for a break. Fortunately, we are fully staffed this year, and one of our head judges (a Republican) has us bring pot luck. For the August midterms, one fellow brought fresh cucumbers from the garden, and the wife of our head judge brought some great fried chicken. Something about the shared mission and shared food seemed to overcome any potential partisan divisions. Someone today said that they expect us to be very busy again...”more than usual for a midterm election.”
In addition to the traditional candidate signs, I had one made up specifically for this election:

Sis insisted that the back side face the house and not the street, as there is an elementary school at the end of the block. But we both stand behind the message:
Ya’ll have a safe Halloween and do whatever you can to GOTV!
