The story of the Halloween stampede in Seoul is a tragedy beyond belief with so many lives lost. There will be more information shared by the media in the coming days, however initial reports are that many first responders and civilians performed CPR on victims. I’ve not seen estimates of how many people were rescued, but more than likely some lives were saved.

CPR is Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the basic concept is inducing blood flow and tissue oxygenation through technically correct chest compressions and ventilations to restore heart and brain function in people that have suffered cardiac arrest. That compressions, and other maneuvers are technically correct cannot be overstated- technique is the difference between life and death. This is where training enters, and why continued education is so vital, and includes information on activating the emergency response ( 911, obtaining nearest AED, teamwork )

American Heart updates CPR guidelines every 5 years using systematic reviews and evidence updates with the last published in 2020. The main thrust of these updates over the years has been an increasing laser focus on the importance of proper chest compressions- location, depth and frequency. Pediatric CPR training is equally valuable, and has important technical differences.

If you have not had recent training, or have never received training, please consider doing this. You may one day save a life.

Here is a resource to help you identify a CPR course near you.
