Country music artist and reality television judge Luke Bryan held a Friday night concert in Jacksonville as part of his Raised Up Right Tour. In the middle of the concert, Bryan announced that he will raise money, in partnership with Florida governor Ron DeSantis (R), for Hurricane Ian relief; most of the proceeds for his upcoming 2 November concert in Estero, Florida will go to the relief fund.
“Because of the hurricane they had to use the venue that I was performing in as a shelter. Well, we’ve been going back and forth, we didn’t know if it was too soon to play or not but the area of Estero said ‘get your ass to Estero.’ So, we’re doing a concert,” Bryan shared from the stage. “So, what we’re going to do is give a large portion of the proceeds in Estero, Florida… to everybody that’s bought tickets, kept the ticket, and spending the money… I’m donating that money to the great state of Florida.”
And Luke Bryan did bring DeSantis to the stage, before an electrified crowd.
x DeSantis just walked out on stage at Luke Bryan. It’s deafening in here. pic.twitter.com/WHelgPCxM1 — Bonnie Upright, APR (@bonnieupright) October 29, 2022
x Thanks for letting me crash the party last night, @lukebryan! pic.twitter.com/GCuTELFOM9 — Ron DeSantis (@RonDeSantisFL) October 29, 2022
Although some may argue that it is nonpartisan to have public officials promote the state relief fund, others may be turned off by a music artist inviting a governor who takes controversial stances within the American culture wars.
x And Luke Bryan just got crossed off the playlist.

x So Luke Bryan admits he hates women, LGBTQ people and immigrants.

x Hey Luke Bryan – if you don’t want to be seen as political, don’t bring a psychotically deranged human trafficking child torturing right wing extremist like Ron DeSantis on stage during your concert. — Palmer Report (@PalmerReport) October 30, 2022
x It should be noted that @RonDeSantisFL was in Jacksonville last night, making an appearance on stage with @lukebryan during his concert before this weekend’s Florida/Georgia football game.
Unless the Governor flew to Jacksonville, he would have passed these banners on I-10.

These stances include support for a “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
x Also just fyi for people telling me he’s conservative. I know that. You can be conservative without being hateful (desantis is hateful). I don’t know why people forgot this. — Sarah Colonna (@sarahcolonna) October 30, 2022
It can be jarring to some people that a governor receives the rockstar treatment from a crowd that tends to tell music artists to “shut up and sing”.
