My Fellow Americans,

On Friday, the 82-year-old husband of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States was viciously attacked by an intruder. The Speaker’s husband sustained a skull fracture and major injuries to his right arm and hands, requiring rapid medical attention and surgery. According to reports, the Speaker herself was the intended victim of the attack.

Jill and I join the leaders of both parties of Congress in praying for his full recovery.

It should not be necessary to repeat that violence is an unacceptable way to express or resolve political disputes. It was unacceptable on January 6, 2021 when our hallowed Capitol was attacked, and it was unacceptable on June 14, 2017, when the House Republican Majority Whip was attacked. It has always been unacceptable and will continue to be unacceptable as long as supporters of Democracy have a say. This should be self-evident, but it merits repetition when rhetoric continues to attack the legitimacy of our elections and even incite violence.

In ___ days we will be holding midterm elections for federal and state offices. Like all elections, these are vital and sacred events for the continuation of our Democratic Republic. They must be carried out peacefully, according to the laws of the federal government and every state, which mandate a fair process with oversight by all parties seeking office. The National Guard, Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice have working relationships with state and local authorities to make sure elections proceed safely and votes are cast and counted accurately.

But we will not tolerate violence of any kind against our public officials and their families before, during, and after the midterm elections. I would be remiss in my duties if I did not do everything to protect all Americans, including and especially those who devote their lives to public service and everyone who is entitled to exercise their right to vote peacefully.

May God bless the United States of America.

May God bless those of all political parties and beliefs who serve their fellow citizens by holding office.

May God bless our troops.
