I chatted with a fellow Kossack yesterday and mentioned that, due to somewhat insulating myself from the most overtly impressionistic newscasting in broadcast media, I was left wanting to know what the real political temperature is around the country. (I don’t know about you, but I got fed up with broadcast news around the time of troop withdrawal in Afghanistan. I had to step away.)

I still consume news, but in print form. Of course, print is a medium that introduces distance. This is done by requiring the person to work for the information, pulling meaning like meat from an oyster, whereas broadcast media is so rapid and full of other distractions that spurious logic can slip past one’s defenses before one can properly reflect.

I could go on. But the main thing deprived in all of this, at this time, is a good feel for where the country is right now.
