Both the wife and I ended up calling in sick today (both medical treatment side effects, not something contagious. My chemo was kicking my ass more than usual today). We were both feeling better later this afternoon so we took the opportunity to head to the county offices and vote early (it’s considered “absentee voting” even though you’re showing up at a county office instead of mailing in a ballot). So we filled out the paperwork and voted.
I had the chance to chat with one of the workers and asked about turnout, he said that so far about 10,000 absentee votes received in the county. Now, grain of salt here because this is second hand, but compare that to 33,706 absentee votes in total the 2020 Presidential Election and 18,837 absentee votes in total during the off-year 2018 election. Also keep in mind that Dallas County is a very fast-growing county population wise. But still, even with that, I think that level of turnout for the election with more than a week yet to go is promising.
And it was a pleasure to vote against the Kim Reaper, who to me is little more than a hyper-controlling serial killer for her COVID response, and of course Franken got my vote against Grassley. Dude, you’re 89 years old trying for a 6 year Senate seat, for the love of God put yourself out to pasture already. Besides, the rumor is that he plans to run, win, and then after a bit retire so that Gov. Reynolds can appoint his grandson, Pat Reynolds, who is a state representative in the Iowa House, to his seat, setting up the Grassley dynasty. Grandson is 39, so if he lives as long as Grandad, that could easily set things up for a Grassley to sit in that seat for another 50 years. For context, Chuck himself has held the seat for 42 years, being first elected to the seat in 1980 after serving 6 years as a US Representative and 16 years as a state representative. Dude has had his butt in a state or federal Congressional seat since 1959 — 63 years in total. Time to go, dude. You’re still stuck in the 50’s when you first elected, time for that seat to join the 21st century.
One downside to our absentee voting system is that if you do it at the county offices, you can ONLY do it during office hours. So, folks working a day job will find it hard to do it if they don’t use a mail in ballot, while retirees and farmers and folks like that (who also tend to lean Republican) will find it easier to vote under those conditions. We only did it today because we happened to be off. If we did it after work, we could do it, but it’d be close, we’d have to scoot pretty good to make it. IMO there should be some weekend or evening accommodations made for at least a few days.
Not much else to say, just an anecdote about voting in Iowa today. Take it for what it’s worth.
