The Founding Fathers on Freedom from Religion
Thomas Jefferson has 3 things written on his tombstone; one is that he wrote the Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom. The founding fathers were very serious about our freedom from religion, but many Americans have forgotten that. SCOTUS sure did when they appeased all the religious zealots by overturning 50 years of legal precedent that many laws that have been passed since row first went into law were based on. Do we really want to go back to the rigid black & white world of the 1950s? The 50s were not Happy Days for everyone which is why the 60s turned out the way they did. We cannot let these billionaires with authoritarian tendencies rewrite the constitution into their version of what they think the United States should be, and the word freedom seems to only play a bit part in their passion play to control our country and eventually the world.
Sadly, this principle has been under attack in recent years. In 2017, for example, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Christian baker who had refused to make a cake for a same-sex couple's wedding. In doing so, the Court overturned 50 years of legal precedent and signaled that businesses can discriminate against LGBTQ people if they claim to do so for religious reasons.
This is just one example of how the separation of church and state is under attack in America today. But it's not just happening here—it's happening all over the world. In many countries, religious leaders are using their positions of power to influence government policy and persecute minorities. We cannot let this happen in America.
The Founding Fathers on Freedom from Religion
The Founding Fathers were very clear about their intent for freedom of religion in America. They wanted to protect the citizenry from state-sponsored religion, not create a Christian nation as many people seem to think. In fact, Thomas Jefferson even wrote the Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom which was later used as a model for the first amendment. It's abundantly clear that they wanted to keep religion and government separate. Today many Americans have forgotten one of the most important founding principles of our nation: the separation of church and state. This principle is enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution, which states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." In other words, the government cannot favor one religion over another or establish an official state religion. So, what happened?
Well, over time people have forgotten or chosen to ignore this important aspect of our founding principles. And lately, it seems like religious zealots are gaining more and more power. Just look at what happened with SCOTUS overturning 50 years of legal precedent on abortion. Or how they've been chipping away at other rights since they overturned Roe v Wade. It's clear that we're in danger of losing our hard-fought freedoms if we're not careful.
The Separation of Church and State Is Essential to American Democracy
The separation of church and state is essential to American democracy for several reasons. First, it ensures that everyone is free to practice the religion of their choice—or no religion at all—without interference from the government. Second, it protects religious minorities from discrimination by those in power. And third, it prevents religious leaders from using their positions of influence to control the government.
The separation of church and state is a vital part of American democracy—and we must fight to protect it. The founders understood that religious freedom was essential to a functioning democracy, and they enshrined this principle in the First Amendment to the Constitution. Today, sadly, this principle is under attack both here in America and around the world. We must not let those who would seek to control us succeed—we must fight for our freedom from religion now more than ever before.
It's important for us to remember that America is not a Christian nation. We are a secular nation where people of all religions (or no religion) are free to worship (or not worship) as they please without interference from the government. This separation is important because it protects both religious and non-religious people alike. It allows us to worship freely without interference from the government, and it prevents the government from establishing a national religion that everyone would be required to follow. Let's keep this separation in place so that we can continue to live in a country where everyone is free to worship (or not worship) as they please without interference from anyone else!
We cannot let these billionaires with authoritarian tendencies rewrite the constitution into their version of what they think the United States should be. We need to stand up and fight for our freedoms before it's too late. Otherwise, we'll find ourselves living in a rigid black-and-white world where everyone must conform or face punishment. And that's not what America is supposed to be about. So, First, we need to educate ourselves and others about what the Founding Fathers intended when they wrote freedom of religion into the Constitution. Second, we need to stand up and fight for our rights whenever and wherever they're threatened. And finally, we need to vote for candidates who will uphold our freedoms instead of selling them off to the highest bidder. Only then can we hope to keep America free for all its citizens.
