Pseudo-Inflation

Again: global price shocks and corporate price-gouging are not currency inflation. Again: Many other countries have higher price increases. Again: Wrong-Wingers are cheering for harm to the public.

Gasoline prices are falling again.

U.S. Gas Prices Fall For 10 Straight Days—Nearing $3 In Southeast

NPR: Whether gas prices are up or down, don't blame or thank the president

Two main forces are sending prices down. One is an improving refinery situation. Last month, outages at refineries, particularly in the West and the Great Lakes area, sent prices in some regions skyrocketing. Meanwhile, autumn has arrived. That means, like clockwork, pumpkin spice has taken over the grocery aisle, colorful leaves have taken over Instagram — and demand for gasoline has started to decrease. Americans drive less when it's colder, and gas prices almost always go down this time of year. So why is U.S. production lower than it might be? There's a tug-of-war going on, between incentives to drill more oil and incentives to drill less. On the "more oil" side you have the profit a company can make on each new barrel it drills. On the "less oil" side, you have supply chain problems, labor shortages, investors who are enjoying high oil prices, and fears of a global recession, as well as the potential impact of long-term climate policies.

Rs in TX Defund Police

For realz.

Houston Chronicle editorial: Harris County Republicans just defunded the police

For the past six weeks, Republican Harris County commissioners Jack Cagle and Tom Ramsey have been engaged in something of a high-stakes poker match with hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars in the pot. They have, in effect, defunded not just police but flood control projects and public hospitals. Why would they go this far? Since first skipping the Sept. 13 session of Commissioners Court and blocking new tax rates from going in effect to pass the proposed$2.24 billion county budget, Cagle and Ramsey gambled that they could either force their Democratic counterparts to adopt lower tax rates or force them to make painful budget cuts. The three Democrats on Commissioners Court — Commissioners Rodney Ellis and Adrian Garcia, and County Judge Lina Hidalgo —figured Cagle and Ramsey as novice bluffers. Why, after all, would Cagle — who is locked in a competitive reelection fight with Democrat Lesley Briones — risk his political future by needlessly obstructing a budget that included two of his stated priorities: a property tax cut and across-the-board boosts in law enforcement funding? Most inexplicably, the “no new revenue” budget means defunding law enforcement. The Sheriff’s office will lose $16.6 million for patrol and administration, including 8.25 percent raises for frontline deputies. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will lose out on a $5.4 million budget increase. The eight county constables will lose a combined $8.1 million.

Texas Mass Shootings Up 62.5 Percent Since Permitless Carry Bill

NYT (paywalled): Texas Goes Permitless on Guns, and Police Face an Armed Public In and around Houston, prosecutors have received a growing stream of cases involving guns brandished or fired over parking spots, bad driving, loud music, and love triangles. In Harris County, criminal cases involving illegal weapons possession have sharply increased since the new law went into effect. Anti-Semitic Hate Crimes Antisemitic incidents hit a record high in 2021. What’s behind the rise in hate? The Anti-Defamation League, which tracks anti-Semitic behavior nationwide, found 2,717 incidents in 2021. That's a 34 percent rise from the year before and averages out to more than seven anti-Semitic incidents per day. Jonathan Greenblatt is the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League and author of the recent book "It Could Happen Here." But we have never seen a situation like this before. You had Jews being beaten and brutalized in broad daylight, say, in the middle of Times Square or Los Angeles or the Strip in Las Vegas, where people who were simply identified as Jewish came under assault and attack. That was new. THE KLEZMATICS - An Undoing World …so unwelcome everywhere we’ve been. x x YouTube Video Elections Pennsylvania In January I will be much better, but Dr. Oz will still be a fraud.
