Weighted, felted, $10

The woodtones in this image are perfect. Over the years I've cleaned and polished them with a soft cloth and a touch of Scotts Liguid Gold cleaner and preservative. Replaced the old felt with individually cut pieces of thin brown felt-like suede, after filing and sanding each piece so the bottoms were even and level. I even gently separated and re-glued the Knights -- they are hand carved and have a peg fitting to their base. And, I gave a White Pawn with a streak of darker grain a name.

I lined the box with fabric, even under the lid. The box is divided, so packing up the pieces isn't a jumble -- but it's a precise fit, start big and finish small. If I could express that experience in words they would never be written. Imagine.

I took a look online and vintage equivalents are up for over $100. Still, this was the only image that had the right woodtones as mine. Funny to calculate inflation, but $10 in 1970 is $75 today.
