U.S. Senator Mark Kelly visited the White Mountain Apaches in Whiteriver, Arizona. The vote is usually 90% Democrat. People are working very hard on turnout.

We are going live on the Navajo Nation with a radio ad that warns right-wing victories in the election would take Native American rights back 100 years.

This may seem harsh, but white supremacists are running for office and will not respect the rights of people of color. With the U.S. Supreme Court ready to support any attack on the Voting Rights Act, I don’t think it is alarmist to point out the very real risks.

Reservations received a lot of federal support during the pandemic, but that could change drastically if right-wing extremists take control of Congress, and particularly if they take the seats that represent Natives.

Our new ad says:

If right-wing radicals are allowed to take control of our government, they will take Native rights back 100 years. Make sure everyone votes. Paid for by Arizona Deserves Better.

The ad costs $21 each time it airs, and it reaches the residents of the Navajo Nation with an area the size of West Virginia.

The races most important to Native Americans in Arizona are the U.S. Senate race, where Mark Kelly leads by a thin margin, and the 2nd District Congressional race, which is a tossup between incumbent Democrat Tom O’Halleran and challenger Eli Crane. O’Halleran and Crane are set to debate on Friday.

The state races are also extremely tight, with Trump-endorsed Kari Lake challenging Secretary of State Katie Hobbs in the governor’s race.

Democrats are leading in the return of early ballots, 41.3 % vs. 35.2% from Republicans. Independents have returned 23.5% of the ballots cast so far. It’s hard to know what this means when the Trumpists are running against early voting. Also, no one knows how many of those Republican votes are cast for Democrats, although Kelly in particular has received many endorsements from prominent Republicans. The 400,000 ballots turned in so far are a growing chunk of the 2.5 to 3 million votes expected.

We sponsored a major event for Kelly last week in Whiteriver, the capital of the White Mountain Apache Reservation. It was well attended, with tribal employees getting time off work and buses bringing in people from remote villages. Kelly, a retired Navy pilot and Space Shuttle astronaut, hit Blake Masters hard on his claim that the U.S. has not fought a just war since before World War II. He also hit Masters on his attacks on the U.S. military, and his desire to fire all of the generals.

I’ve never actually understood why he didn’t mention admirals. Maybe he is OK with the Navy brass, or maybe he doesn’t know that the U.S. has a navy.

I’ve long been unhappy with the way the Mainstream Media reports the result of polls. Even though Republicans nearly always lie, the MSM reports their poll responses as gospel. For example, “70 percent of Republicans believe Trump won the 2020 election.” In fact, most do not believe the Big Lie but tell pollsters what the MAGA movement demands they say. In previous elections, there was a lot said about “shy” Trump voters. Now, I wonder how many of the Republicans are shy about their Trump fatigue. There are some of them out there and I don’t think the pollsters are equipped to find them. We’ll soon see.

One thing that may be creating “shy Trump skeptics” is the overt blasphemy of the MAGA movement. You hear things like “Trump will return to judge the quick and the dead.” For a few hardcore Trump believers, this is great stuff. For people who have spent time in seminaries or Bible study or lived in Western culture, this is Jesus’s role. Though we no longer burn people at the stake for blasphemy, there have to be religious voters who are offended by this stuff.

We have a lot of ballot issues, so here is a quick rundown:

Prop 128 – No – attack on the people’s right to put issues on the ballot

Prop 129 – No – more of the same

Prop 130 – Yes – increased tax exemption for disabled Veterans

Prop 131 – No – creates lieutenant governor

Prop 132 – No – Requires super majority to pass initiatives

Prop 209 – Yes – Protects against predatory debt collection

Prop 211 – Yes – Requires that the source of campaign money be disclosed

Prop 308 – Yes – Allows in-state tuition for non-citizens who graduate from AZ high schools.

Prop 309 – No – Requires additional voter identification

Prop 310 – Yes – Allows for increased funding for fire departments
