There’s an election coming up in just two weeks.

You may have heard some doomism. But don’t mourn: Organize!

(Ready to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT? We’ll include a link at the end of this news roundup)

Just a reminder of how hard this is — A Democrat can’t be taken seriously if he stammers (after a mild stroke!)

..According to CNN’s polling in advance of the debate, Fetterman leads Oz in Pennsylvania. But neither man can justifiably claim debate victory. One performed badly; the other behaved badly. Now, Pennsylvania voters need to decide what they value more: Substance or presentation... In a sane political world, Oz’s views would be disqualifying, no matter how slick his presentation. In our actual political world, I worry that Fetterman’s presentation – and mostly the public’s unfamiliarity with people who are cognitively sharp but not sharply articulate – will be the deciding factor in this race. This was all a real shame because on Tuesday night Fetterman showed he has more guts and commitment to the democratic process, no matter how badly the platform worked against him, than any candidate in recent memory. He’s banking on the hope that voters will see through the imperfect presentation and focus on the substance. And now it’s up to voters to decide if they’re going to meet his idealism, or if they require made-for-TV artifice. x And there we have it! Dr. Oz just told us decisions about abortion should be made by “a woman, her doctor, and local elected officials.” 😳 Vote for @JohnFetterman — Cecile Richards (@CecileRichards) October 26, 2022

x The people piling on Fetterman for speech delivery issues (following a stroke) still want to put this guy back in the White House:pic.twitter.com/irOul47HCF — Andrew Wortman 🏳️‍🌈🇺🇸 (@AmoneyResists) October 26, 2022 Meanwhile, in Georgia, a man who was clearly hit on the head repeatedly while playing football and as a result has difficulty parsing a sentence AND also has abhorrent ideas AND is a morally repugnant human being, is coasting to possible victory, and nobody on the right cares. Meanwhile, in Georgia, a man who was clearly hit on the head repeatedly while playing football and as a result has difficulty parsing a sentence AND also has abhorrent ideas AND is a morally repugnant human being, is coasting to possible victory, and nobody on the right cares.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - With 16 days left in Georgia’s nationally watched 2022 midterm campaigns, a new poll from a progressive think thank shows Democratic U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock with a one-point lead over GOP challenger Herschel Walker. The same poll from Data for Progress shows Gov. Brian Kemp leading his Democratic challenger, Stacey Abrams, by 10 points. Walker and Warnock have debated only once in a race that could determine the U.S. Senate’s balance of political power. Despite allegations that Walker paid for an abortion for a former girlfriend and continues to face allegations of domestic violence, the former UGA football legend remains in striking distance of an incumbent U.S. senator.

x Unlike Herschel Walker, I believe in the dignity of workers. My opponent has lied about his companies, his education, his family, and his past. He's profited from defrauding veterans and ripped off charities.

He is not ready to represent Georgia. https://t.co/ix2hcF8CQx — Reverend Raphael Warnock (@ReverendWarnock) October 25, 2022

And likewise in NC, we have a decent human being vs a corporate stooge, and once again… they’re neck and neck

Democrats desperately want the Senate’s majority, and Beasley’s win would be historic for North Carolina as she would be the first African American elected to the seat. But North Carolina hasn’t elected a Democratic senator since 2008, and it’s a purple state with unaffiliated voters making up its largest group. The opponents have consistently polled in near ties. But Budd has an advantage in several recent polls, including those released by East Carolina University and The Trafalgar Group. Marist put out an additional poll early Wednesday showing Budd and Beasley in a near tie among everyone polled — with Budd ahead, though within the poll’s margin of error, for those definitely planning to vote.

On the other hand, some races that everyone thought had already been put to bed… are also tightening.

Newly released polling from Texas shows that the state’s race for governor may be closer than what other surveys from the past few weeks have suggested, with Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke just a few points behind incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. According to a Beacon Research poll published this week, 48 percent of registered voters in Texas say they plan to vote for Abbott, while 45 percent say they are going to back O’Rourke, a former U.S. congressman who came within 2.6 points of defeating Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in a senatorial race four years ago. Among those who say they’re likely to vote — a slightly smaller number of voters than the number who are registered — Abbott leads by 48 percent, while O’Rourke has the support of 46 percent of respondents. And among those who say they’re “extremely motivated to vote,” the point differential between the two candidates is just 1 point. x If you’re wondering if I cried after voting— yes. I did.

The last year of my life has been devoted to Texas and other races across the country and to finally be able to cast a ballot and vote for candidates I personally know and have come to care about is very special. — Olivia Julianna 🗳 (@0liviajulianna) October 26, 2022

Why are things so confusing right now? In part it’s because of the “likely voters” screen. Pollsters presume that those who have voted before will vote again, while those how have not (especially younger voters) will again not vote. It’s an assumption that has proven correct in the past — but not the recent past, as we have seen in the Kansas abortion vote and a slough of special elections this year, where motivated Democrats have turned out in record (and unexpected) numbers.

So don’t mourn — organize!

x 📊 BREAKING: POLLS ARE TIED 📊

Tim Ryan: 46%

JD Vance: 46%

In a poll released TODAY, we are neck-and-neck with my extremist opponent, JD Vance. Team Ryan, I need your help to take the lead. — Tim Ryan (@TimRyan) October 24, 2022

x Let me update that. @538politics now has EIGHT generic ballot polls from the past week, and NONE shows a Republican lead (Dems lead in 7; one tie).

In other news… President Biden keeps getting great things done — and occasionally even getting credit for them!

A common smell of American childhood, the diesel fumes wafting through yellow school buses, may soon be obsolete, as school districts across the nation turn to electric buses amid falling costs and growing concerns about global warming. The shift would spell a major change to children’s experience of school, replacing the sweet-noxious scent of diesel with the whizz and whir of electric motors underneath a school bus floor. The rollout is happening quickly — orders expanded more than tenfold since the beginning of 2021 — and the Biden administration aims to speed it up even faster with a Wednesday announcement of the winners of $965 million in subsidies for electric and low-emissions bus purchases around the country. Some advocates say they are hopeful they can electrify the entire American school bus fleet by 2030. Proponents argue that school transportation is a natural candidate for electrification, since the buses operate on fixed routes with regular breaks that can be used to charge batteries. They say the children most dependent on school buses to get to classrooms — students of color and lower-income families — also suffer disproportionately from asthma and other illnesses that are worsened by constant exposure to diesel fumes. Studies also show that exposure to pollution worsens school performance. x A common smell of American childhood, the diesel fumes wafting through school buses, may soon be obsolete. Meanwhile, the only thing the GOP have is “Drill for Oil” and “Cut taxes to the rich guys”. Literally. That’s all they’ve got.

x GOP plan to fight inflation, part 1. Drill for oil. Drill all the time, everywhere. It will not bring down the price of oil, but it'll make a lot of oil executives very happy.

We KNOW that's the plan because they keep saying so, only they call it "unleashing American energy." — RL Miller (@RL_Miller) October 25, 2022

x 50% of new US oil production would be unprofitable without govt subsidies - peer-reviewed journal ⁦@NatureEnergyJnl⁩ found. ⁦@CarbonBubble⁩ ⁦@CampanaleMark⁩ https://t.co/RpLpLugOMk — Henrik Jeppesen (@HJeppesen) October 26, 2022

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday took aim at Valero Energy Corp.'s “record profits” this year as gasoline prices soared, escalating his battle with the powerful oil industry. In a statement, Newsom renewed his call for a price-gouging penalty “to put these profits back in the pockets of Californians… Valero reported $4.7 billion in profits for the second quarter of 2022, a 2,801% increase from a year earlier, and the company has made $8.3 billion so far this year, he said. “This is just rank price gouging. They can get away with it,” Newsom told reporters at the time. “They’re taking advantage of you, every single one of you, every single day. Hundreds of millions of dollars a week they’re putting in their pockets, lining their pockets at your expense, and then polluting this planet and leaving us all the external realities and costs associated with that.”

x The media should be repeating this every day: when asked why they aren’t producing more, oil and gas CEOs said it was because of “investor pressure” to keep prices high, not government regulations or lack of access to public lands. pic.twitter.com/W8Ch0xSZxQ — Jamie Henn (@jamieclimate) October 19, 2022

In other news… if you haven’t noticed, there’s a reason there aren’t so many bugs stuck to your windshield after a road trip: We’ve killed off the bugs. (Unspoken: This is VERY BAD FOR THE BIRDS, because without a food source, the birds are also disappearing)

x Here's a fascinating #roadecology exploration, courtesy of @andrewvandam: How much of the "Windshield Phenomenon" is caused by declining insect populations, and how much by changing car aerodynamics and driving rates? https://t.co/dvu2C6phpX — Ben Goldfarb (@ben_a_goldfarb) October 25, 2022

And Covid is STILL BAD. And getting worse. And is NOT “the same as getting the flu”

People infected with the virus also were 50% more likely to have an ischemic stroke, which is caused by blood clots, compared with the never infected group. Those who had COVID were 80% more likely to have seizures, 43% more likely to have mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression, 35% more likely to have headaches and 42% more likely to suffer movement disorders, such as tremors, compared with the control groups. Researchers said governments and health systems must devise plans for a post-COVID world. “Given the colossal scale of the pandemic, meeting these challenges requires urgent and coordinated - but, so far, absent - global, national and regional response strategies,” Al-Aly said. x COVID raises risk of long-term brain injuryhttps://t.co/grQD1egRB4 — Jess (@MeetJess) October 24, 2022 x COVID-19 infection in crucial brain regions may lead to accelerated brain aginghttps://t.co/UvJSuC3Nn5 — Jess (@MeetJess) October 24, 2022

x In the US, many struggle to name a living scientist. In Canada, it's not so hard because David Suzuki has been a household name for my entire life. The rest of the media should take note — THIS is how you interview an election denier.
