TV doc who plays one in real life, Mehmet Oz, would have challenged FDR to a foot race – just so his supporters could made fun of the way he runs.
You know what happens when you get folks with disabilities (like Kansas Senator Bob Dole) in the government? You get legislation that levels the playing field for everyone – like the Americans with Disabilities Act. But our current, post-decency, “grab ‘em by the pussy” political standards don’t allow for giving a damn about fair play. Nah, it’s 2022 and Americans with Disabilities is such a quaint 1990’s notion. And candidate Oz is just fine with that. Remember — Oz was endorsed by a man who made fun of a physically challenged reporter.
But let’s face it. The US Senate ain’t about fair play, either. It and it’s ugly cousin – the Electoral College – are all about preserving disproportionate advantage.
Still, despite his reduced auditory processing skills (seriously, I’m sure the senate doesn’t want deaf people either), John Fetterman landed a few great political punditry punches. Fetterman pointed out that Emma Lazarus poem at the base of the Statue of Liberty doesn’t welcome the huddled masses so they can be lied to and shipped to a far-off island the day before their legitimate immigration hearing. Even though he had to read – in real time – a transcription of what the moderators and Oz were saying, his wit remained sharp as a tack.
Oz is slick – I’ll give him that. Of course, after 30 years on the boob tube (as my uncle liked to call it) he’s got TV presence – but he’s also a physician. I’m sure Harvard would like their degree back if they thought he didn’t understand Fetterman’s disability. But playing dumb was clearly part of his plan. There was a lot in their debate Oz didn’t seem to grasp – like how the minimum wage works. His newly adopted commonwealth, Pennsylvania, has a humiliating minimum wage - $7.25 an hour. Everytime the moderator asked Oz about it, the infomercial charlatan waxed senseless. Fetterman eloquently spelled it out for him, “Every work has dignity, every paycheck should have dignity, too.”
Oz – a citizen of Turkey who recently voted in Turkish elections – knows a lot more about socialism than he lets on. He lobbed the word at Fetterman every chance he got, even though his other country of origin (he’s a dual citizen) has universal healthcare and an advanced pension system. Of course Oz’s American based political party – the GOP – has vowed to eliminate social security from the US — promising good old capitalist suffering to millions of seniors.
It was during the tv personality’s rant about Bernie Sanders that Fetterman delivered my favorite line of the night. Mayor Fetterman asked Oz why he didn’t go pretend to be from Vermont so he could debate Bernie instead! Good one, John. (See Oz lived in his in-law’s house so he could claim PA residency).
I wish last night’s debate hadn’t happened. Not because I was disappointed in Fetterman – au contraire – he impressed the hell out of me with his ability to function so impeccably under such duress. But because I live in a shallow country where people sit slack jawed in wonder at people who have more than they do. More money, more beauty, more access and more ruthlessness. Because I know many people won’t grasp the herculean performance by Fetterman in the debate, I did the only thing I could do. I sent his campaign my beer money. If you give a damn about this country – you will too.
