What courage looks like
I was interested in seeing what the chattering class would make of John’s occasional struggle to put sentences together last night in the debate. The reviews are in and they are about what I expected, though the response in the comments on the primary debate post last night in this forum were a bit surprising. That the national media ignored what was patently obvious to me is to be expected, I didn’t anticipate the full on buy in to a similar narrative from some in the Daily Kos community. I get it that people may want buffer their disappointment and mitigate the cognitive dissonance that comes from a loss in this key race. There is a tendency to rush towards the most immediate circumstances as an indication of the larger reality.
In this case there is much more to the story however. I suspect the people in Pennsylvania know the man John Fetterman very well. What they think about him probably wasn’t diminished by the debate, it may have been augmented by a deeper respect for someone who faced one of the worst things that can happen and got up off the mat and arrived at the arena to stand up for others. I fell in love with the man after watching him. Where others may have seen stumbling, I saw mastery and courage.
I think pundits missed the moment in their early assessment of the ramifications, that is the most basic human tendency towards decency and empathy. Sure there are people who out of basic ignorance conflate dysphasia with cognitive fluency. My partner is a speech pathologist and she works with children with exceptional IQs, genius level cognitive abilities who have trouble getting sentences out and mastering basic word structures that we who possess more average intelligence can easily express.
The differences between the two candidates has never been more stark after the debate last night. John Fetterman, who frankly I didn’t know much about because I live in another state, impressed me greatly as a human being. I suspect others saw what I saw.
