So there had been all this upset over the letter from progressives on diplomacy to end the Russia/Ukraine war. People are comparing this to Chamberlain and Munich, but it is actually much closer to Wilson and entry into WWI. The progressive position on armed conflict is it is dangerous and is not worth the costs, no matter what the reason. This is not because of some ideal for humanity, it is because war is a pandora’s box, no matter who is fighting or for what reason. Bad things always happen as a result (on very rare Oocasions the positive can outweigh the negative. The progressives were strongly against entry into WWI. They wanted a negotiated settlement. Wilson was determined, and what came out of his entry into the war was WWII. There are times when the situation is so inhumane, and negotiation impossible because one partner is insane or a continuous liar, such as WWII. And I believe the progressive movement quietly supported US entry into WWII. But the general, Pragmatic thinking is that war should be avoided whenever possible. So the letter on Ukraine was essentially a progressive position. The liberal (and neo-liberal) position has always been that conflict will eventually result in a positive outcome (remember when Iraq was supposed to be turned into a desert based democratic utopia?) A lot of people who supported the Iraq war also now support the Ukraine war.

All that said, obviously the progressive believed it was better not to send the letter. They held it back probably because they understood exactly how people it would react. But here is was released 15 days before the election. The question is who released it and why. Of course, the old advise, “follow the money” comes into play. One of the signees? I very much doubt these any of these individuals would betray each other. More important, what would they have to gain. It wouldn’t have any impact and if they knew the reaction in July and decided not to release it, why would they decide to release it now. Some are saying Democratic Socialists of America. Did they have the letter? Maybe one of the signees gave it to them. But again, why would they release it now. What did they have to gain? These people are the tip of the spear fighting MAGA. What gain would they see releasing the letter now – and if they had the letter why would they not have released it in July. It just does no make sense (and please, none of this the people who don’t agree with me are stupid. There are been A LOT of blatantly racist comment along these lines).

So again, who might have the letter and why did they decide to release it now. I have my own theory but as the progressives who signed are saying by remaining silent now it not the time for recriminations (you listening Josh Marshall – gee you sure are into winning the election, but somehow …..).

Again, who had the letter and why now. We can debate this in fifteen days.
