Draper stopped by The Daily Beast’s podcast, “The New Abnormal,” to promote his new book, “Weapons of Mass Delusion: When the Republican Party Lost Its Mind.” Draper told host Andy Levy that Trump has been bandying about the idea of tapping the Mad Georgian as his running mate for most of the year.
Draper also confirmed rumors that Greene could be Trump’s running mate in 2024. The idea has been “discussed since February of this year, and it’s been discussed repeatedly. Now, to be fair, I mean, how many of these conversations has Trump had with other people?” However, what Greene has above the others, Draper says, is that “she has been unflaggingly loyal to Trump throughout. What is Trump concerned about most of all in a VP after the Mike Pence experience? Loyalty. He knows that if he needs someone to fight for him to overturn a presidential election. He has every reason to expect that Greene would be by his side and would be his proximate warrior.”
This isn’t surprising. Trump himself admitted that his idea of “the best people” means people who are loyal to him above all else—and such little things as intelligence and integrity be hanged.
If Greene were to become Trump’s running mate, it would complete a dramatic rise to the top of the political world. Draper recalled that the GOP initially wanted to “kick her to the curb immediately” because of her boorish and trollish behavior. However, they couldn’t ignore how she seemed to print money and became a social media powerhouse—even with getting her personal Twitter profile nuked earlier this year.
According to Draper, it’s gotten to the point that virtually every Republican running in Georgia has become a Greene clone. It makes sense. After all, Greene pretty much is the stereotype of the Republican base, and the Georgia GOP base is as Trumpified as anywhere.
To be sure, a Trump-Greene ticket would certainly gin up the base. But it’s equally certain to explode in his face in a general election. We got a lovely preview of how it could look last week, when Greene debated the Democrat running against her in her northwest Georgia seat, Army veteran Marcus Flowers.
No one could watch that debate, which was sponsored by the Atlanta Press Club and aired on Georgia Public Broadcasting, and credibly deny what we already knew—this woman is thoroughly unhinged. See for yourself. Ron Filipkowski got clips.

To my knowledge, it’s the only time apart from floor speeches that Greene hasn’t been before a mostly fawning audience. Remember, she was virtually unopposed in 2020 after her Democratic opponent was forced to drop out when he couldn’t find a place to live in Georgia after being thrown out of his house in a nasty divorce. From where I’m sitting, if Trump was foolish enough to choose Greene, you could cut a ton of ads from this debate alone. There’s probably more where that came from; watch the full debate here.
One of my friends suggested that Trump would be making a blunder on the order of McCain picking Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008. I disagree. It would be far worse. Palin may have been a weapons-grade wingnut, but at least she could at least pretend to be halfway civilized once you got past her word salad-laden speeches. Greene doesn’t even try to be civilized. The fact that Trump is even thinking about picking her as his running mate is yet more proof that he is unfit for office. After all, anyone who is even considering picking someone as unhinged as Greene is not interested in uniting the country.
