When I happened last week to tune into the Warnock/Walker debate, it was originally through the livestream that Sam Seder had set up. I was way late, coming in around ten minutes before the close, and as the festivities wound down, Seder immediately lamented that Warnock had not landed a knock-out punch. He worried aloud that the ambiguous debate (no real decisive winner) would allow life to be breathed back into the race.
Apparently he wasn’t the only one, as many pundits pressed a generic “reset” button on the race.
Since then, the right-wing pundits seem to have gained peacock feathers, because they are strutting all over the place. They are projecting dominance and superiority.
— This is a psyop campaign in the emotion war, folks. At least it feels like one.
It’s a really simple one, too. It’s just capitalizing on the catastrophizing many of us indulged in during the past week or so. I felt a bit of it, too, and I stay away from most media sites other than those in print. I try to limit my exposure to emotional contagion, but I was as susceptible to it this week as anyone else on our side of the fence.
Perhaps, though, because I do try to distance myself from broadcast media, I may have been able to clear that “alarm” signal that had started to emanate from a deep yet vague location. It was manufactured, communicated merely through conservative posturing.
They’re thumping their chests prematurely and hoping that we give in.
As Timothy Snyder said in On Tyranny, don’t surrender in advance.
