Happy Sunday morning from Bremerhaven Germany.
Fuel prices, inflation, natural gas prices and weather. Russia, Ukraine and a damned uncertain future have all caused my wife and I to sit down and discuss the car and motor roller use.
We work at the same workplace, never the same shift, but it’s only about two kilometers from home- that’s roughly a little over a mile, so we decided to start walking.
Yeah, I know- she’s German, but I’m an American and the idea of WALKING anywhere is or was a little weird for an Ami of my generation.
Luckily I’ve been here a LONG time- I’m acclimatized.
Weather is a factor, what we do is povide security for the martitime police boats when they’re at anchor so, this being the North Sea, weather is always a factor. There is a lot of rain and the 60 mile an hour Winter winds will be starting up soon.
But this is Germany. There is a bus stop not 200 meters from my door, it gets her or I to work for 2.50 Euro within ten minutes, we have umbrellas and water proof clothing.
The car and roller (Two cycle engine, terrible polluter but cheap-ish). We’re keeping them, despite the car being almost as old as one of my kids, because the price for small cars has gone nuts. Ours is an old Renault Clio, it úses about 6 liters to every 100 Kilometers and while that is very economical- we don’t want to puke that stuff into our atmosphere any more than we must.
What I mean there is that we aren’t 20 somethings anymore. But the walking and bicycle riding is doing a lot of good for us, me especially with my back problems. Plus, you sleep better when you finally get to bed,
And to be clear, it isn’t as though we can’t afford it, we both work, the kids are grown, we have enough disposable income.
We just don’t want to enrich the oil companies or ruin our world.
So, it’s brisk and sometimes wet, windy and often cold- a real travail after a twelve hour nightshift-
But we’ve started walking.
We hope you all have a great Sunday.
Kell and Anja
