There are at least two good reasons why war correspondents/photographers for Western media do not participate in the fighting alongside the troops they are embedded with.
1. It compromises your objectivity/ability to do your job, although objectivity usually goes by the wayside anyway considering the people you are covering are also protecting your life.
2. Journalists usually make piss poor soldiers.
It appears even pseudo-journalists like Russian propaganda mouthpieces make piss poor soldiers.
The infamous propagandist known as WarGonzo, aka Simon Pegov, has reportedly been wounded while fighting somewhere in the Donetsk region.

Stepped on a mine. Lucky for him it wasn’t a bigger mine.
Turns out it might have been a Russian mine. Reports say it was a PFM-1 Lepestok mine.

But this is what happens when you go to the front to prove some sort of point.
It appears he lost part of his foot but will, unfortunately, probably be back to writing soon. And no doubt he’ll be in Moscow soon receiving the Hero of the Russian Federation from Putin himself, or whatever they call their highest medal.
