Part 2 — This diary has around 45 editorial cartoons on the Republican plan to dismantle Social Security and Medicare, election deniers, Trump’s many legal challenges, Steve Bannon headed to prison, and MAGA buffoonery. The final section is about the funky classic “Honky Tonk Women” by the Rolling Stones, the One and Only “King,” and a rare find over 2,000 years old in England.

I hope to post another 15-20 cartoons in the comments section including protests in Iran, the state of the Russia-Ukraine War, and Climate Change.

Part 1 — I posted it earlier today with over 40 editorial cartoons and other relevant Tweets about Republican insistence on reintroducing failed economic policies, voter suppression issues, the resignation of British Prime Minister Liz Truss, the global economy and the Biden Administration’s record, and MAGA madness. In the final section, you’ll see a remarkable letter written to a high school student by author Kurt Vonnegut, what really irked Galileo when he arrived daily at work, and George Carlin on the banned seven words disallowed on 1970s television. I have posted an additional 20+ cartoons and Tweets on assorted issues in the comments.

Thanks for reading these diaries.

Ending Social Security and Medicare: Two of the Most-Successful Federal Programs in American History

“It’s Not a Democratic Talking Point, Senator. It’s in the Plan.”

If FOX News is giving the Republicans so much grief about proposed cuts to Social Security and Medicare, then, you know there is some truth to it. Watch Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) basically lie about his proposals, but the host wouldn’t let him get away with it.

Lies, More Lies from Mark Finchem (R-AZ)

Donate to Adrian Fontes — Democratic nominee for Arizona’s Secretary of State . “Adrian Fontes is a proud Arizona native, an honorable veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and the father of three daughters, who has spent a lifetime fighting for justice and defending our Democracy.” Arizona Republican secretary of state candidate Mark Finchem revealed during Thursday's debate that he has been interviewed by both the Justice Department and Jan. 6 committee about his alleged involvement in the Capitol attack. This was the first time Finchem has publicly confirmed speaking on the matter with federal officials. The four-term, far-right Arizona lawmaker, who continues to espouse the "Big Lie" and is running to be the state's chief election officer, revealed the Jan. 6 interview and Justice Department involvement in a back-and-forth on the debate stage with his opponent, Democrat Adrian Fontes.

Finally…

The Rolling Stones — Still Going Strong

Honky Tonk Women was released on July 4, 1969. The below Twitter version — featuring Mick Jagger and Keith Richards on guitar — was recorded a few months earlier in March 1969 as “Country Honk” and has slightly different lyrics

You can read more about this song here. ‘Honky Tonk Women’: The Story Behind The Stones’ Funky Classic The seed for “Honky Tonk Women” was planted during a trip that Richards and vocalist Mick Jagger took to Brazil. Inspired by the cowboys working the ranch where they were vacationing, the two started knocking together a Hank Williams/Jimmie Rodgers-inspired tune, with Jagger using the countrified tone of the music as inspiration for his lyrical ode to the working women of the Old West. (You can get a taste of their original idea through the re-recording of it, entitled “Country Honk,” found on their 1969 album Let It Bleed.) Keith Richards has called the song “the culmination of everything we were good at at the time.” Bassist Bill Wyman referred to it as “triumphant.” This (perhaps unspoken) prediction proved more than correct. Released as a standalone single on July 4, 1969, “Honky Tonk Women” went to No.1 in seven countries — the last time the group would achieve such a feat in their home country — and has proved to be one of The Stones’ most enduring and beloved tracks. But before it could reach iconic status, the song, as many famous tunes do, had to go through a metamorphosis. x They should do a whole album like this. pic.twitter.com/XVg4YCWSfb — Ted Gioia (@tedgioia) October 15, 2022

Diary Poll

Thanks for taking it. I’d love to hear campaign stories from your district, state, or region. How is your candidate doing? Is the campaign going as expected? Has anything unexpected happened so far?

Thanks.
