For their direct involvement in the evils of WWII, Hungarians were a nation occupied by the russians. So for years everything from Pécs to Miskolc was definitely,
‘A béka ségge alatt’
(under a frog’s ass)
After over a decade of a brutal occupation, with most of that time spent with Stalin Big Brotherin’ over them, on October 23, 1956, Hungarians decided that they had had enough and got rid of the ruthless russian officials/police who were horribly abusing them and theirs.
But by November 4th, following a week of relative peace during which Imre Nagy had attempted to begin establishing a sovereign Hungarian government, Khrushchev sent russian tanks rolling into BudaPest and obliterated any and all opposition, which wasn’t very much at all considering Hungary was a nation disarmed after WWII. So by November 10th Magyars were all back under control of the USSR.
They weren’t even anti-communist. All Hungarians wanted in 1956 was a democracy, or simply the right to choose for themselves what sort of government would write their laws.
Judging by the state of the Hungarian nation today, I can’t help but wonder what they would have done with the opportunity back then, if the 1956 Forradalom had not been violently suppressed by russia, rather than how things have turned out for Magyars after an extra 40 years of grotesquely abusive occupation.
