Sacramento — Today, the National Day of Action to Stop Brutality, Voices of Strength (VOS), a non-profit that supports and uplifts the voices of those impacted by police killings, will hold a press conference and rally at 11:00 am at the California State Capitol - North Steps.

”Families impacted by police murder from across the country will be meeting at the Capitol on Saturday morning for a press conference to address police brutality,” according to a press advisory from Voices of Strength. “Families are traveling across the country to stand in solidarity together and share their cases.”

Local families will be present, including the family of Darell Richards (killed by Sacramento Police), the family of Michael Barrera (killed by Woodland Police), the family of Jaime Naranjo (killed by Sacramento Sheriffs) the family of Marshall Miles (killed by Sacramento Sheriffs), the family of Augustine Morales (killed by Sacramento Police), the family of Shayne Sutherland (killed by Stockton Police), the family Antonio Guzman Lopez (killed by CSU San Jose Police), the family of Gabriella Navarez (killed by Citrus Heights Police), the family of Jaime Naranjo (killed by Sacramento Sheriffs), along with many more.

“This conference is being organized by the families impacted by police violence and is youth led,” according to the group. “The children that have been impacted by police murder will be sharing their stories on the North Steps of the Capitol at 11 a.m. sharp. A list of demands created by the families will be addressed, as well as the ongoing issue of police homicides on a statewide and national level.”

“For too long the struggle of families whose loved ones have been killed by law enforcement across the nation have gone unnoticed and unrecognized; their loved ones immediately criminalized by the police and local media outlets that regurgitate falsified police narratives, turning away any opportunity for the community to be engaged and for the family to garner community support,” the group continued.

“As we have learned in far too many cases, the community plays an integral role in the delivery of justice (or lack thereof). Every year 1000-1500 new families across the nation are inducted into a cohort forced to live with the all too devastating reality of state-sponsored terrorism. Most of these killings receive little to no media attention, creating a complete absence of support, leaving the family stigmatized and isolated. On the other hand, the few nationally-known cases receive all of the public's attention only for families to be tokenized and exploited for one of the most traumatic events of their lives,” Voices of Strength stated.

Voices of Strength, supporters, and local activists said they “will join the families to refocus on local efforts for justice and accountability while standing in solidarity with families impacted by police homicides from across the nation, many of which will be joining virtually. This Saturday, this collective of families will share their experience, strength and necessary wisdom for these challenging and transformative times. Please join us and stand in solidarity with these impacted families.”

Established in 2020, Voices of Strength (VOS) is a non-profit that supports and uplifts the voices of those impacted by police killings. Founded by Marissa Barrera, sister of Michael Barrera, it was created as a resource for the families who are often isolated after the loss of their loved ones, with little to no support. VOS works with families on a national level and hosts a series that highlights victims, with their family sharing their truths and experiences. (www.VoicesofStrength.info) Voices Of Strength
