I live in a rural part of Ohio. I get it. With the gerrymandering and the White nature of the suburb, we’re not going to be electing Democrat state reps. Still it’s depressing to see so many races without a Democratic challenger. Worse two races actually have Democratic challengers, but they are running as “write-ins”. I struggle with the optics of this. I get that it’s only a token gesture to put up a sacrificial lamb to run as county auditor who has no chance of winning, but if you actually have candidates who are willing to put their names up, but the state party isn’t organized enough to even get them on the ballot. How hard is that?
I can understand not bothering to recruit a candidate, but getting candidates and then not bothering to get them on the ballot? That just speaks to organizational dysfunction and laziness. At least if we had our candidates, we could canvass, and build networks and organization to deliver some votes for the national office. We could help out grab a few votes for Tim Ryan while organizing events for candidates who actually have their names on the ballot.
I really am going to have to do this all myself, aren’t I...
