In WAYR?, I note what I’m reading and comment...you note what you are reading and comment. Occasionally, I may add a section or a link related to books…
I am reading:
Dawn by Octavia Butler - This book is just too damn good!
Different is threatening to most species,’’ Nikanj answered. “Different is dangerous. It might kill you. That was true of your animal ancestors and you nearest animal relatives. And it’s true for you.”...”.It’s safer for your people to overcome the feeling on an individual basis than as members of a large group. That’s why we’ve handled it the way we have.”
So the Awakened humans were genetically altered by the Oankali and the ooloi so that the humans would not feel the fear of differentness.
I want to think long and hard on this thesis, particularly the part that individuals overcome fear of differentness easier than groups...which I believe is right.
I’m a little stunned by the depth and complexity of human psychology that Butler writes about. I expected a good book (after all, I did read the book 20 years ago...but this reading hits differently).
