“The equal rights of man, and the happiness of every individual, are now acknowledged to be the only legitimate objects of government.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell

Minority Leader McConnell;

Democracy works only if policymakers of all political persuasions are willing to put self-interest aside and engage in honest debate and deliberation about issues that impact our lives, the lives of people we love, and people who live in our communities.

Which Republican in Congress doesn’t know that if they refuse to honestly and openly negotiate varying points of view with political opponents, they are actively choosing to destroy democracy; the great American experiment millions have given their lives to preserve?

The words and actions of Republicans who exaggerate, obfuscate, lie, and smear to destroy opponents in self-serving attempts to hold on to power, privilege, and wealth do nothing to improve our lives and the lives of families, colleagues, friends, and future generations.

So, what gave you, Kevin McCarthy, Elise Stefanik, Steve Scalise, Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, Rick Scott, and too many other Republicans to list here the idea that the American people don’t deserve complete confidence in the integrity of every elected official?

The American people who pay your way have the inalienable right to know for certain that you and your Republican colleagues in the House and Senate will:

At no time use elected office for personal or political party gain

Consider the potential consequences of legislative initiatives on the lives of individuals, couples, families, and groups

Embrace the fact that relationships between and among constituents, colleagues, and opponents are important vehicles for change

Establish trusting relationships with colleagues and opponents to enable all members of Congress to carry out their responsibilities to serve the American people faithfully

Never act impartially or give preferential treatment to any private or political organization or individual

Not allow donors, lobbyists, and special interest groups to interfere with the conscientious performance of one’s duties to serve constituents and the American people

Place loyalty to the Constitution, the rule of law, and ethics as defined in Executive Order 12674 (Principles of Ethical Conduct for Government Officers and Employees) above self-interest and the quest for power

Preserve the rights of all Americans, regardless of age, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender identity, gender, language, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status, to reap the benefits of confidentiality, privacy, and self-determination

Respect the dignity and worth of constituents, colleagues, opponents, and staff members

Speak and act with accuracy, honesty, and objectivity, whether in the Capitol or out campaigning

Treat constituents, colleagues, the media, and opponents with dignity and respect

Don’t we?

Impatiently,

Davy Z Jones
