The Blue Wave is getting even Bigger- and Closer

Note#1: This post is Number 8 in a series of reports on small-donor fundraising, as reported by the nonprofit Act Blue.

Note#2: I have again added a poll for readers.

ActBlue has just released the results of the Third Quarter of ‘22, showing a deluge of political donations. More than 2.6 million unique donors gave over 14 million donations, totaling $646 million . More campaigns and nonprofit organizations used ActBlue to fundraise in Q3 than in any previous quarter. In Sept. ‘22 alone, donors gave $269.7!

Voters are clearly highly engaged. Two of the largest days this quarter for small-dollar contributions were on September 14-15, when Sen. Republicans introduced a bill to enact a nationwide abortion ban. Unsurprisingly, abortion rights and fears of contraception limits are driving the record giving. Concerns about protecting democracy and voting rights are also playing into the heavy giving, though the relative intensity of each is unclear.

The donations are also evidence of long-lasting momentum. This has been a very strong cycle from the start. In the cycle to date (Since Jan 1,’21 to now), donors have given more than twice as many contributions and dollars to campaigns and causes around the country than what we saw in the 2018 midterm cycle.

Even more noteworthy is that small-dollar donors gave more than triple the number of contributions and dollars to Dem secretary of state candidates compared to 2018 contributions. For gubernatorial candidates, donors gave double the amounts raised in 2018.
