In the 2020 presidential election, Latinos in Georgia showed their political power. Despite only making up 4% of all votes cast statewide, our community was decisive in turning back toxic MAGA candidates in a race decided by fewer than 12,000 votes. Heading into the critically important 2022 midterms, Latino voters in Georgia, all 1.1 million residents according to the 2020 U.S. Census, a 32% bump from the 2010 survey, will now once again make their voices heard.
Mi Familia Vota, the organization I lead, is committed to building Latino political power. We are educating Latinos about how to engage civically in our electoral process to ensure they vote in the 2022 elections. We just launched our #BastaMAGAmigos campaign, where we will hold all candidates accountable to the priorities of the Latino community.
We know Governor Brian Kemp and his down-ballot MAGA amigo Senate Candidate Herschel Walker are not with the Latino communities in Georgia. Latinos know a mentiroso when they see one, and we know Walker is a liar. We also know that Governor Kemp is hurting our communities with his politics.
On critical Latino policy priorities, Governor Kemp has a record of hurting our communities. Whether it's Kemp preventing the expansion of Medicaid from helping Latino families get better health care, his refusal to grant in-state tuition for the undocumented, or his refusal to pass common sense gun control,
Latinos in Georgia are concerned about their health care. In a recent UnidosUS/Mi Familia Vota poll, 23% of Latinos in Georgia have anxiety about their health care. They know that the difference between life and death could come with incredibly high healthcare costs. Lowering the cost of health care is a critically important issue for Latinos in Georgia.
About a half million Georgians could gain coverage through full Medicaid expansion at an estimated cost of $336 million for two years, with the feds picking up 90% of the tab, according to an analysis from the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute. Unfortunately, Governor Kemp has blocked a full expansion of Medicaid. He has put forward a half-expansion. A plan that makes less economic sense than full expansion and forgoes billions of dollars of federal funding. The governor's expensive halfway measures cover fewer Georgians at a higher price.
We know that undocumented people in Georgia contribute to our economy and should receive in-state tuition; Governor Kemp Is Stopping that. Nearly 30,000 undocumented young adults in Georgia could immediately benefit from in-state tuition. Dreamers currently contribute $1.3 billion in spending power to Georgia's economy each year and nearly $100 million in state and local taxes. Without offering in-state tuition for Georgia Dreamers, Dreamers can leave and join the workforce in that state, representing a long-term loss to Georgia's community.
Finally, Latinos in Georgia are concerned about crime and gun violence. In a recent UnidosUS/Mi Familia Vota poll, 33% of Latinos in Georgia have anxiety around crime and gun violence. 75% of Latinos polled in Georgia believe that guns are too easy to access. 61% believe that elected officials need to find a way to put an end to school shootings. Governor Kemp has made it easier to get guns . He recently signed a law allowing residents to carry handguns in public without a license or background check. He backed a similar proposal when he ran for governor in 2018, and expanding gun rights was a crucial part of his platform.
While Kemp is terrible for Latinos, somehow Herschel Walker is worse! Walker says he's a man of integrity, honesty, and faith; Latinos know a mentiroso when they see one: he is a Trump-like liar .
We know that if Walker becomes the Senator of Georgia, he will be a rubber stamp on the extremism of #MAGAmigoss and Donald Trump. He has had many questionable business dealings , lied about his charitable giving , and will help Trump steal an election . That is why we launched #BastaWalker, to hold Herschel Walker accountable for his lies to the people of Georgia and the Latino community. As such our Georgia team will hit 5,000 unique doors in Gwinnett, Dekalb, and Cobb Counties.
Mi Familia Vota is working to build Latino politico power; that is why we are on the frontline, educating and ensuring that our community shows up to vote in 2022. We are fighting voter suppression and working on voter education and mobilization to hold politicians accountable to our community. Last run-off election Mi Familia Vota was on the ground in Georgia, so we know that when we engage, we can push back on MAGA politicians. If you want to join our fight in Georgia, please share our launch video and sign up here .
This election, Latinos have had enough of Georgia's anti-Latino politicians. It’s time to say basta con las mentiras, basta con los MAGAmigos. Basta con Brian Kemp and Herschel Walker.
