Regardless of if you’re in VA, our elections will be a focal point in a year to come. As it stands both chambers of the legislature are wildly close for which party will take the majority. My race is once that isn’t anticipated to be a battleground, which is exactly why I anticipate catching them by surprise when we flip this thing to help democrats regain their house majority. I knew I would be making calls and canvassing for whoever ran against our long-term incumbent republican, so when I was asked to run I figured it couldn’t hurt.

Republicans retook control of the House of Delegates last election, halting the progress that legalized cannabis, ended the death penalty, and made Virginia the southern beacon for progressive policy. Races like mine will help us fix that.

After turning in my ballot, I picked up a bit of that sense of “well what now?” that has been echoed by voters I have canvassed who have voted early. So the question is: How do I show voters there is no time for rest when it comes to VA elections? I don’t know that answer yet but I will be testing different things out this week to get folks on my team.

Looking outside of VA, I am hoping to see some more support when people don’t have their own elections coming up and think that by garnering support from everyone (maybe even you!!!) to reach out to voters in VA and informing them that there is significant stuff on their 2023 ballot, we can make actual change once again for the people in our communities.

Running in this race is not for me, it’s to be a referendum on what type of elected officials we send to Richmond. The people of VA-98 deserve someone who has struggled with them, and not someone who has enough wealth to be virtually unaffected by the status quo.

My name is Zach Coltrain, I am a 20 year old university music student on a Pell Grant who can genuinely reflect the experiences of those in VA 98. I am the sole democratic candidate and I need your help to keep the energy of my campaign going for the next year. Donation and Volunteer links are below.
