Pence is already stumping, and I'm paying attention
Perusing the headlines of a morning at the AP from the comfort of my own phone, I am likely to click on news item(s) from Ukraine. There are typically five to seven ‘stories’ highlighted by various editors in my daily email subscription. Dare you enter, and please do take good care should you do so, from there one can meander endlessly in the burgeoning rabbit warren of infinite information tunnels. It’s not literally digging in the dirt, but you can definitely get soiled.
I'm not one to venture beyond one or two articles, and am more likely to screenshot a headline or photo that I find humorous, hilarious, even, than to be tempted or moved by sensationalist or ’breaking’ must read items. Decades in the business, both in the public and private sector will jaundice you, I do declare.
But this headline actually lured me in, and no shit, there seems to be substance here. Not that shit isn't substance, but this is compelling and substantive shit, compared to the normal and everyday variety to which one is regularly subjected.
I'll let you read it and weep
Pence proposes the party of former pot(us)lickers place themselves to rights
Briefly, in addressing the conservative Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC, Pence declaimed,
“Our movement cannot forsake the foundational commitment that we have to security, to limited government, to liberty and to life. But nor can we allow our movement to be led astray by the siren song of unprincipled populism that’s unmoored from our oldest traditions and most cherished values,” he told the think tank audience. “Let me say: This movement and the party that it animates must remain the movement of a strong national defense, limited government and traditional moral values and life.”
Okay, that’s pretty lame tame standard speak. I know, I know. But wait: there’s more!
“Now, I know there is a rising chorus in our party, including some new voices to our movement, who would have us disengaged with the wider world,” Pence said. “But appeasement has never worked, ever, in history. And now more than ever, we need a conservative movement committed to America’s role as leader of the free world and as a vanguard of American values.”
Better, perhaps, but even more compelling:
“As Russia continues its unconscionable war of aggression to Ukraine, I believe that conservatives must make it clear that Putin must stop and Putin will pay,” he added. “There can be no room in the conservative movement for apologists to Putin. There is only room in this movement for champions of freedom.”
I was lamenting only yesterday in diary comments that the GOP had tolled its own death knell, kowtowing as it has in malfeasant fealty to the ungreat unful orange when a voice of some semblance of reason cries out from the desert(ers) of our American ideals.
No, I don’t propose we all, or indeed any of us, vote repugnant. I certainly can’t abide most of Pence’s so called self styled “Freedom Agenda.” I do though, take note that perhaps there’s yet some scant hope we can return to something more closely appropriating balance, where a two party system moves in a more coordinated lockstep, promoting the best interests of the country, supporting the Constitution, adhering to and believing in the rule of law and reason. Maintaining freedoms of speech and bowing to the voices and will of the people it seeks to govern.
Of course, the fallback position remains largely unpalatable. From AP again, in late March, 2022
Pence’s platform, released Thursday, combines traditional Republican goals such as increasing American energy production, cutting taxes and rolling back regulations, with priorities pursued by former President Donald Trump on issues like trade and immigration.
The above and following are snippets from the aforementioned platform he’s packaged and touting, perhaps in a bid to run in 2024, and includes
plenty of culture war red meat for the GOP base, pledging, for instance, to save women’s sports by “ensuring that sports competitions are between those who share their God-given gender” and calling for all high school students to pass a civics test.
I will stress and can’t stress enough: I am in no way promoting a republican agenda, or suggesting we all stump for any rethug currently seeking office, or in any potential candidate of the future. I’m just frankly astonished and consider this to be more of an eye opener than much of anything that’s come to light of political note lately, in my limited theater.
What’s even more truly telling is I can actually type his name without adulterating it and possibly utter it aloud without derision, were anyone around to hear that.
And if you know me at all, you know that’s something.
