The most upsetting thing I have read this year, in a year of very upsetting news, is Ed Pilkington’s article in the Guardian about the hard-right Republican plot, spearheaded by Steve Bannon, to amend the constitution using a constitutional convention called by 2/3 of state legislatures. Thanks to gerrymandering districts, Republicans already control 30 states out of the 34 they would need to pull this off.
Anyone who questions the fairness of the electoral college allowing a president who didn’t win the popular vote to take office should be incensed at the thought of “perhaps the most audacious attempt yet by hard-right Republicans to secure what amounts to conservative minority rule in which a minority of lawmakers representing less-populated rural states dictate terms to the majority of Americans.”
Mark Meckler, the leader of a major group behind this plot, said on Bannon’s show, “We need to say constitutionally, ‘No, the federal government cannot be involved in education, or healthcare, or energy, or the environment’”. (Courtesy of Guardian News & Media Ltd.)
