Chicago Sun-Times: Cook County’s basic income pilot: 184,000+ applicants, just 3,250 spots by Elvia Malagon
During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Takiyah Franklin continued working as a phlebotomist even as she worried about the possibility of spreading COVID-19 to her own children. “I couldn’t take off,” she said. “I had to work.” Franklin, 46, of Oak Park, is among the thousands applying for the Cook County Promise Guaranteed Income pilot , which will provide 3,250 residents with $500 a month for two years with no strings attached. Franklin said she would like to use the extra income to finish community college courses she’s taking to transition into a new career while also allowing the single mother to spend more time with her 3-year-old and 7-year-old sons. She quit her job as a phlebotomist and works part-time as a home care aide. “I think that plays a big part — the parents being at home making sure the kids have a home-cooked meal, making sure we read to them, spending that quality time with your kids,” Franklin said. “That’s the important thing because right now, the things that are going on, a lot of kids aren’t getting shown love.”
New York Times: The Fed, Staring Down Two Big Choices, Charts an Aggressive Path by Leanna Smialek
Federal Reserve officials have coalesced around a plan to raise interest rates by three-quarters of a point next month as policymakers grow alarmed by the staying power of rapid price increases — and increasingly worried that inflation is now feeding on itself. Such concerns could also prompt the Fed to raise rates at least slightly higher next year than previously forecast as officials face two huge choices at their coming meetings: when to slow rapid rate increases and when to stop them altogether. Central bankers had expected to debate slowing down at their November meeting, but a rash of recent data suggesting that the labor market is still strong and that inflation is unrelenting has them poised to delay serious discussion of a smaller move for at least a month. The conversation about whether to scale back is now more likely to happen in December. Investors have entirely priced in a fourth consecutive three-quarter-point move at the Fed’s Nov. 1-2 meeting, and officials have made no effort to change that expectation.
Washington Post: XBB, BQ.1.1, BA.2.75.2 — a variant swarm could fuel a winter surge by Carolyn Y. Johnson
For two years, coronavirus variants emerged, one by one, sweeping the globe. But this fall and winter are expected to be different: Instead of a single ominous variant lurking on the horizon, experts are nervously eyeing a swarm of viruses — and a new evolutionary phase in the pandemic. This time, it’s unlikely we will be barraged with a new collection of Greek alphabet variants. Instead, one or more of the multiple versions of the omicron variant that keep popping up could drive the next wave. They are different flavors of omicron, but eerily alike — adorned with a similar combination of mutations. Each new subvariant seems to outdo the last in its ability to dodge immune defenses. “It is this constant evolutionary arms race we’re having with this virus,” said Jonathan Abraham, an assistant professor of microbiology at Harvard Medical School.
NBC News: Stockton serial killer used ghost gun, officials say, as man is charged with 3 murders by Dennis Romero and Antonio Planas
A man who authorities say used a ghost gun in five homicides in Stockton, California, from April 2021 till late last month was formally charged with murder Tuesday. Police searching for a serial killer arrested Wesley Brownlee, 43, during a traffic stop early Saturday. Officials say he had been planning to target another victim before he was apprehended. Brownlee was charged with three counts of murder Tuesday. Those three deaths are among the six that police say a serial killer is responsible for. The killings took place from April 2021 to Sept. 27 of this year. The district attorney said she expects additional charges in two other murders in Stockton, as well as an attempted murder. A slaying in Oakland has been linked to the case, but the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said it was not yet clear whether charges against Brownlee would be pursued there.
Guardian: Russia’s new Ukraine commander signals civilian evacuation from ‘tense’ Kherson by Pjotr Sauer, Dan Sabbagh, and Julian Borger
The new commander of Moscow’s army in Ukraine has announced that civilians were being “resettled” from the Russian-occupied southern city of Kherson, describing the military situation as “tense”. “The enemy continually attempts to attack the positions of Russian troops,” Sergei Surovikin said in his first televised interview since being appointed earlier this month, adding that the situation was particularly difficult around the occupied southern city of Kherson. , which is sending missiles and drones. Surovikin’s statements on Tuesday came amid repeated military setbacks for Russian forces prompting Moscow’s dependence on Iran , which is sending missiles and drones. On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that military advisers from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were on Ukrainian soil, at a Russian military base in occupied Crimea. The Iranians were reported to have been deployed to help Russian troops deal with problems with the Tehran-supplied fleet of Shahed-136 drones, rebranded as Geran-2 by the attackers.
DW: German cybersecurity chief fired over alleged Russia ties
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser on Tuesday dismissed the head of the BSI national cybersecurity agency, Arne Schönbohm. Schönbohm was removed from his role as head of the BSI national cybersecurity agency after media reported that he had links with people involved with Russian intelligence services. What do we know about the dismissal? The sacking was first reported by the news magazine, Spiegel, and later confirmed by an Interior Ministry spokesperson. "The background to this is not least the allegations, which are well known and widely discussed in the media, and which have permanently damaged the necessary public confidence in the neutrality and impartiality of the conduct of his office as president of Germany's most important cybersecurity authority," the spokesperson said.
