So… how was your weekend?
Mine was too short as usual. Ever since I had covid I can never seem to get refreshing sleep, and since I became a middle management type at my job, I am so busy at work, I feel exhausted a lot of the time.
I’m fired up tonight though. The SF-based political group that I work with had a great meeting tonight, and we got over 80 new signups to make calls or canvass in NV, AZ, or the CA Central Valley. Saturday I canvassed in the Central Valley for Rudy Salas running for Congress to flip CA-22, and I was inspired by the people I talked to. The precinct where I canvassed is in a small, very low-income, very Republican town. They have among the worst air quality in the state and their water is undrinkable, and their local government does practically nothing, sitting on the federal funding that they received to make improvements. They need change so badly and they were more than willing to talk with me about it.
Last night I went to the movies and saw Tár with Cate Blanchett. I would watch anything she is acting in. She was phenonemal, and the movie was very well done, visually engaging, great script and cast and music, and altogether engrossing.
It was also incidentally a little problematic or mixed up in what it suggested (spoiler alert, but it’s been in some reviews) about cancel culture and academia among other things. And I thought it went off the rails a bit near the end. Nevertheless, highly recommended!
As the film seemed to be approaching its denoument, suddenly an alarm began to sound and lights began to flash in the theater. In the scene onscreen, Blanchett’s character was finely attuned to and searching out the source of all manner of ambient sounds, so at first we thought it was part of the movie, but then an announcement blared that we were to proceed to the nearest exit.
We all waited in the street while two firetrucks drove up and crews made their way inside, and came back out a few minutes later. It seemed it was a false alarm; we were allowed to re-enter the theater and finish our movies. And we all got free passes! The movie was 2 ½ hours long even without the impromptu intermission that took half an hour or so or the interminable string of commercials and previews beforehand, and it was after 11 when I got home.
33 years ago today. My chest still tightens and my breath comes short when I watch the footage.
