It was a very long ballot. I’m glad it arrived at the house, four days ago, along with my husband’s and son’s, and a recycle bin-full of actually useful literature, as opposed to those glossy candidate ads I toss before reading. Don’t care who they’re from. Toss.
I had time to study. I got to eat and drink, sit down as long as I wanted, go online, even take those trips down the hall or outside with the dog, the whole time I was deliberating. I emailed a friend, one who studies the local judicial races at length, and has recommendations with reasons behind them. I got to sleep on it — figuratively, since I doubt they’d be pleased to get back something with face wrinkles imprinted on the paper. I studied the propositions at length, making sure what they claimed to mean was what they actually said, because I’ve been down that road before. Oops!
I talked at length with the other members of the household about how they wanted to vote on issues, and made sure to point out where their specific wishes would be achieved or thwarted. We agree on most basic principles but not on every detail. When I finally had all my information gathered, we sat down together and went through the ballot, each marking where they wanted to fill in their circles. I trust my sources, including several here on Kos from Arizona, and they trust my honesty and the reasons I passed on to them to consider with certain candidates or propostions. When we finished, our ballots went in their envelopes, got signed, sealed, dated, and a phone number added. They went outside to the mail pick-up this morning, where we can keep an eye on them until our mail carrier comes to pick them up. There are problem people in the neighborhood we don’t trust to leave anything undisturbed overnight.
I put my “I Voted” sticker inside a car window and plan to leave it there until the big day. I’ve worn them before but they don’t last a full day, especially under a seat belt. In a few days I’ll call the number provided to track whether it arrived. I slept soundly knowing that nobody stopped me, I didn’t procrastinate or forget, or heaven forbid wind up with a covid reprise keeping me away from the polls. Disabilities didn’t keep any of us away from voting because we can’t stand for hours. Today it’s good to be an American in Arizona, still free to make our wishes get counted.
All the rest of you will determine whether I/we can say the same in another month. GOTV!
