The outcome of the 1948 Truman-Dewey election was determined far before the day of voting. Dewey was ahead in all the polls right from the start. It was so much like a foregone conclusion, The Chicago Tribune put out an early edition headlined DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN!, without even waiting for the results.

I got an insight into what happened in that election in 1960 when I worked for a Wall Street investment bank – lowest pay rate $48 a week – that had great employee benefits. One of those benefits was a free lunch and believe me I would have had a really hard time without it. It wasn’t a cafeteria, we were served at large round tables. Employees were assigned seats and it was all random so I sat with people from all sectors of the bank… file clerks and investment bankers at the same table.

The subject of the 1948 election came up. One of my table mates, a rock solid Republican, explained how he talked up Dewey all through the election, he was there 100%, but when he got into the booth he voted for Truman. It was like a cosmic wave, millions of Americans must’ve changed their minds at the last minute. Something clicked.

That’s what I’m counting on this time. There has to be something wrong with the polling when Walker is competitive with Warnock in Georgia. Walker is so far out of his element, he’s barely qualified to be a page or intern in the Senate, let alone Senator. He’s a compulsive liar, multiple historical abuser, hypocrite and can’t even put together a coherent thought or sentence.

It boggles the mind then that he could be competitive with Warnock who’s a great spirit: smart, witty, a genuinely warm, friendly, empathetic human being. He truly embodies the Christian ideal. He’s just plain good.

One event that gives me faith is the abortion vote in Kansas. Polls called it a toss up and yet it won in a landslide. More so, it was purposely written and presented in a misleading way that required people to really know how to vote. It was a true cosmic wave.

If we can’t keep both chambers, all progress will halt, nothing remotely beneficial to the American people can happen. And it won’t be just America at risk, If the Repugs are in power, they’ll threaten the entire planet with their climate denial and fealty to the oil companies. We’ll be fucked.

I am confident... we can’t lose, impossible to imagine… and yet…
