Unfortunately student organizers, candidates, and activists have to kick things into overdrive with the situation we find ourselves in. As a North Carolina student I am watching as young Dems do everything they can to elect Cheri Beasley to the senate, including making calls, knocking doors, meeting on campus, and hosting a debate watch party. I see lots of similarities to the races I work on back home. My congresswoman Elaine Luria also had her first debate this week, and is in a race with razor thin margins.

The unique situation in Virginia now, is the 107,000 voter registrations that were not properly accounted for. Almost 8,000 voter registration applications in my city alone were sent back to be reregistered for the upcoming elections. The scuttlebutt on the situation is that these registering voters are likely demographically reflective of what we have seen in Kansas, Texas, and virtually every special election since the Dobbs decision. Young voters and voters concerned with reproductive autonomy have been registering to vote in droves, but VA doesn’t get positively spun headlines like other states due to the fact our governor and his administration have dropped the ball on our registration filing process.

x 🚨: In light of the ‘force majeure’ - ‘data system glitch’ experienced by @vaELECT in regard to ~ 107k voter registrations over the past 4 months, the leadership @vaELECT has the power to grant themselves an extension for received voter registrations. They should do this now. https://t.co/ncbr0P7oaD — 90 For 90 (@90For90) October 6, 2022

x So, we have 40K voters that volunteers didn’t contact when we were knocking a “new voter” universe. Not a harmless error. https://t.co/EmbjAC64Pg — Steve Verdier (@steve_verdier) October 5, 2022

x In 2021 my opponent won by a margin of less than 5,000 votes and thats one of the largest margins i’ve seen in Virginia Beach elections. This is a huge deal, I’m hoping the VB registrars office takes care of each and every one of these valuable new voters in our community. https://t.co/i2fjDhtoxz — zach coltrain (@ZachColtrainVB) October 12, 2022

Running my own state assembly campaign from my college apartment doesn’t come with a reward at the end. My work as a candidate and an organizer won’t be over this November or the next when my name is on the ballot win or lose. Right now we are focused on engaging youth voters in the 3 High Schools within VA-98 and making sure that they are prepared to have a voice in political discourse within my hometown. My opponent continues to be out of touch with the members of our community, and it’s beyond time these gen z voters and activists show up and voice their frustrations just like every other age group in Virginia Beach.

All of this to say, the energy my generation is bringing to the table is unmatched. I have met with such a vast and diverse group of young people since I have filed to run, and our message is only get louder despite there not always being gold at the end of the rainbow. These students and volunteers don’t need a cookie, because our prize comes in making change to the world we are being given. Candidates like myself are appearing on ballots all over the place, some on this election cycle who have even begun live debates challenging their opponents.

x Just watched tonight’s debate online and my goodness! @MaxwellFrostFL looks like he could step into Congress tomorrow and get to work serving the Orlando community in Washington!

I can’t wait to see him make history when he’s sworn in as the first member of Gen Z in Congress! — Ray Reed (@RayReedMO) October 14, 2022

x Thank you for your support! 💪 https://t.co/xaEEzP0zNS — Sam “Honey” Lawrence (@SamforOhio) October 14, 2022

If you want to help me in my goal to raise youth engagement, and to flip my district from red to blue in VA, check out the links below to keep up to date and to support me in these endeavors. We have just over a year to unseat a long running incumbent with some of the deepest pockets in the VA legislature.
