Candidate Background

Her biography is a typical American immigrant success story. She is looking to be the first Latina elected from Oregon. I wish her success in winning the election.

Her father emigrated from Mexico before she was born, and eventually settled in Oregon. He worked extremely hard to make it up and be hired as a police officer.

She had to scrimp and save and took seven years to accomplish it, but Andrea graduated from UC Berkeley, which gave her opportunities that her parents never could have dreamed of.

She was a legislative aide to various members of Congress, including Harry Reid, Pete Stark, and Darlene Hooley. She eventually ran for the Oregon State House to start her own career.

Signature Issues

Andrea Salinas would likely be a pragmatic progressive if elected to Congress. Her issues page doesn’t seem to be leftist, but it certainly isn’t reading as a moderate either. She will be strong on issues I have written about so many times I have lost count. Let’s see what makes her unique.

Homelessness Crisis: Salinas would work to bring down the costs of renting and housing, which have spiked in recent years. She would also fund mental health programs and addiction treatment programs that often lead to homelessness.

Equity and Justice: Salinas always tries to come from a lens of protecting marginalized voices and through the lens of equity. For instance, she was able to get Oregon farmworkers overtime pay in an impressive piece of legislation. Expect her to tackle unique issues if she makes it to DC.

Climate Change: As a member of the League of Conservation Voters, her record on the climate crisis is excellent. She also wants to make sure the brunt of the crisis isn’t foisted upon people of color and marginalized communities. She knows bold action is needed to save the planet at this stage.

Elections History

Recent Elections —

2020 President: Joe Biden (D) 54.8%, TFG (R-inc) 41.7%

2020 House: NONE (this is a brand new district)

2022 PVI: D+4

2022 Race Rating: Leans Democratic

This is a brand new district, thus it doesn’t have much history. Much of the area has been previously in the 5th district, which has been a swing seat for a very long time. In that district, moderates tend to win elections and I suspect the same will hold true for this district. I am sorry that I don’t have more to report for this section, but I cannot make up a history that doesn’t exist.

Political Tour of the District

The brand spanking new Oregon’s 6th district.

This district is primarily made up of the old 5th district, but parts of the 1st district were also added to it. It was designed to elect a Democratic member of Congress, but something seems to be brewing in Oregon in 2022 and this district doesn’t appear to be as secure as I thought.

Here’s where this race will be won in the 5th district.

Portland Suburbs: These areas are the home base of Andrea Salinas, and they are also one of the Democratic anchors of the district. It is very important for her to do very well here, as the rest of the district minus one big city isn’t as friendly to Democrats.

It is very important for her to do very well here, as the rest of the district minus one big city isn’t as friendly to Democrats. Salem: Salem is the capital city, and it is a light blue oasis in a sea of surrounding red turf. The city can swing against Democratic candidates in some instances, so it is important that Salinas work hard to ensure this city stays voting for our candidates.

Here’s where we need to keep the margins down, or we lose.

Yamhill and Polk Counties: Once you get away from the city of Salem and the small cities like McMinnville and Monmouth, the terrain grows red fairly quickly. Salinas will need to stem the losses as much as possible given the voters below may not be as reliable as usual.

Salinas will need to stem the losses as much as possible given the voters below may not be as reliable as usual. Betsy Johnson Voters: The coalition that governs Oregon seems to be fracturing, as moderates seem to be gravitating towards conservative Democrat Betsy Johnson. If these voters protest and leave the Congressional lines blank or even vote GQP, bad things will happen.

Activism — Help How You Can!

Andrea Salinas is proving to be a great fundraiser, at least so far. In the second quarter, she raised $792k, which is excellent for someone who isn’t in Congress. Her problem is that she seemingly spent a lot of it, because she only has $363k cash on hand as of the end of June. I think she had a contested primary that would explain it.

Her biggest problem is that she is facing a businessman in Mike Erickson who has a self-funding ability. He raised $385k and self-funded $750k for a grand total of $1.13 MILLION dollars in quarter two. He also spent a lot of money in the primary, but his self-funding can replenish stocks faster. He has $243k cash on hand.

I will eagerly await the third quarter fundraising reports. They are due by October 15th, although stellar fundraisers often post it earlier than that. It is getting late for donations, but they still matter.

Volunteers are what make any campaign possible, especially in the hectic last month before an election. There is so much that needs to be done, whether it is phone/text banking, soliciting donations, canvassing, updating who already voted, and on it goes. Oregon has three competitive races this cycle, and this is one of them. If you are nearby, sign up below.

VOLUNTEER FOR HER CAMPAIGN HERE

As for her social media profile, it is definitely not as prolific or as far reaching as others have been. She has 3.8k followers on Twitter, which is not enough this late in the game. She needs to get her campaign noticed in order to get her message out. She also isn’t sending out messages often enough, though she has picked it up in the last week.

x I am so proud to see Oregon listed as the #1 easiest state to vote! Easy to vote & hard to cheat! Our vote-by-mail system is a model for the country. In Congress, I will protect the right to vote & remove barriers to access the ballot box.https://t.co/HVtRrPG36d — Andrea Salinas (@AndreaRSalinas) September 20, 2022

She also has a Facebook account and an Instagram account. Both are about as active as the Twitter account. It’s not a good sign.

This seat is yet another one that may determine control of the House of Representatives. Something is afoot in Oregon this year, and I think that mapmakers there could’ve drawn better lines to protect each district that is being targeted. Despite having the best district, Salinas seems to be faring the worst. I hope in my heart that she can pull off the victory so that we keep the House.
