Hey there, fellow VentHooligans! How’s alls y’alls this fine evening? Having a beautiful Second Summer here, days in the 80’s nights low 50’s. Nice!! Got a painting project on my patio involving the French doors and portico. Lots of sanding, lots of powerwashing and lots of painting. Why leave it to October? Why do it myself? I’m a procrastinator who underestimates the scope of my projects. I like projects like this. I sanded the thresholds down to the beautiful clear cedar under the paint, 100 years old! The pergola has 4x8 beams of solid straight cedar, I’m not stripping them just sanding to get a clean smooth surface. It’s delightful working outside and prettying up the old girl!

Today is the 60th anniversary of The Columbus Day Storm. I was in 4th grade. It was a beautiful warm fall day, like we are having now. There was a breeze but it stopped, the sky got dark and amber. We were sent home from school with directions to go right home and inside. Yeah, right!! We never got out of school! The wind picked up and my neighborhood had large Maple and Elm trees between street and sidewalk. They started creaking and branches were breaking since they still had most of their leaves. Now getting inside was a good idea to us. My Dad got home early and had a surprise for us, a 6 week old orange tabby Manx kitten. We were in 2nd, 4th and 6th grade, trapped in the living room, winds high enough now to blow trees over and cut off electricity. Had a fire I the fireplace, and couldn't go upstairs because a tree could fall on the house, through a window, whatever. the three of us always fought 2 on 1, and fight we did, all night over who got to hold the kitty who didn’t want to be held, chasing it to hold him, what to name him, who held him longest. Then we cried when dad took him outside to go potty, “He’s going to blow away!” As an adult with kids, that would have been a Godawful night. We slept in sleeping bags in the front room. No electricity or school for 2 weeks. Our neighbor behind us had a gas range, so everyone emptied their refrigerators and later freezers and she cooked for us, even fresh bread!! The storm was equal to a Cat 3 hurricane with over 100 mph winds, mass destruction and 50 deaths. We named the kitten Benie, Top Cat’s buddy. After Fred, our next door neighbor moved, we renamed him Freddy Cat, our original choice. He went to the beach with us every weekend and summer, terrorized the cats and dogs of the block. Another neighbor behind us had a fish pond and her own frog colony. They’d get into our backyard and Fred would kill them leaving their bodies for my Dad to pick up before we saw the carnage!
