We need the January 6th Committee to act so that we can restore our democracy!
During the first five January 6th Select Committee hearings, they presented a case against Trump that “implicated the same two federal crimes that a federal judge found Trump likely violated: 18 U.S.C. 371, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and 18 U.S.C. 1512, obstruction of Congress.
“The sixth hearing on June 9th established a new element of these possible conspiracy and obstruction crimes and other possible offenses: violent intent. Witness Cassidy Hutchinson established Trump’s violent intent on January 6, and the hearing went back to the origins of Trump’s desperation: his loss of all legitimate avenues to challenge the election after the Electoral College met on December 14 and confirmed Joe Biden as the nation’s next president.”
Three months have passed since the last hearing, and during that time, Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis has moved forward on the Georgia election fraud case against Trump, and 17 others and DA Willis has said, “The allegations are very serious. If indicted and convicted, people are facing prison sentences.”
Another suit against Trump, pro-Trump militias, and individuals, which was brought by seven veteran Capitol Police Officers who defended Congress during the Insurrection, has moved ahead despite Trump’s attorneys’ lawsuit to quash it. According to the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, their suit “contends that Trump and his allies violated the Ku Klux Klan Act and D.C. law by scheming to block Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s win.”
While this is part of a different case, under the aegis of an “espionage warrant,” at Mar-a-Lago, the FBI recovered highly classified government documents that Trump illegally removed from the White House. Within the last two days, federal prosecutors Glenn Kirschner and Andrew Weissman have publicly stated that there is enough evidence for the DOJ to charge Trump for Obstruction of Justice.
And, despite all that, and so much more, Donald Trump has continued his assault on the integrity of the 2020 election, all of which has been disproved, has endorsed election deniers in the midterms and is holding rallies throughout the United States in which he is sowing seeds of doubt about the midterms, and inciting violence.
And, I keep on asking myself how we Democrats can combat it since Republican donors have poured millions of dollars into the midterms focusing on disinformation and lies about Democrats while lying about their own criminality in supporting Trump’s, and the participation of some Congressional Republicans and Trump allies in the 2020 Insurrection and coup.
While President Biden gave a tough Labor Day speech, in which he excoriated “MAGA Republicans, the extreme right and Trumpies,” we Democrats don’t have a national election spokesperson, who on a daily basis, is condemning Republican abuses and demolishing their lies, while presenting our successes and inspiring our base!
For now, we can only hope that if the J6 Select Committee has done their job, they will convince American voters of Trump’s criminality and that of many Republican candidates and election deniers. Given that their next hearing is Thursday, October 13 at 10:00 a.m., we don’t have long to wait.
While there is no information about what the committee plans on doing, we know that committee members, more than anyone else in our country, know which Republicans are guilty in addition to Trump. And, given the importance of their work, the time the members have invested in the process, and their dual goals of determining who is to blame, and how to safeguard our democracy in the future, hopefully there will be enough information to present multiple criminal referrals of Trump and others to the DOJ, and also institute some important safeguards before the November 8th election.
If they can’t or won’t recommend referrals, then hopefully they will present such damning testimony and/or a summation of Trump’s and Republicans’ criminality that it will rip apart their web of lies, brand them as the criminals and domestic terrorists they are, so that Democratic candidates can mobilize and destroy them in the final stretch.
At the same time, we need to continue doing everything we can to GOTV, and support our democratic candidates.
