The original patent for insulin was sold for just $1 so everyone would have easy, affordable access to this life saving drug. Judging by the way corporate sellouts like my opponent Senator John Thune vote, however, no one would ever have guessed that insulin was once readily accessible to all. Fortunately, there is no need to guess how much money my opponent has happily taken in campaign contributions from healthcare and pharmaceutical companies, nearly $500,000.
Earlier this year, Congress voted on legislation to cap insulin prices at $35 per month. Of course, my opponent voted against saving South Dakotans their hard-earned money on medication that is essential to their health and well-being. In fact, according to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 10% of South Dakotans have been diagnosed with diabetes. Nearly 3% of South Dakotans have undiagnosed diabetes while 34% of the state’s adult population–220,000–is prediabetic.
Senator Thune knows his votes are indefensible, so he scrapped the traditional three Senatorial debates in South Dakota for just one that he stipulated could only be on the Friday night before Election Day. He understands that if his shameful record is highlighted he could very well lose his Senate seat to me. If I had to defend the votes and positions he’s taken, I’d certainly be scared to debate my opponent too!
Because we’re only four weeks from Election Day, Senator Thune has just gone up with his first ad buy of the general election. He’s falsely attacking Democrats and parroting lies from Fox News and Mitch McConnell about the Inflation Reduction Act to cater to his base. Fortunately, I have an ad lined up to get on television as soon as next week.
South Dakota is one of the cheapest media markets in the country. Additionally, South Dakota is the 5th-least populated state. So, it makes sense that the #2 Republican in the Senate with over $16 million cash is only planning to spend $104,000 for two weeks of television ads to saturate the market.
