J.D. Vance and the Evolution of the Republican Party [1]

In a debate between Ohio Democratic Senate candidate Rep. Tim Ryan and his Republican challenger, J.D. Vance, Ryan threw down the gauntlet , saying “I’m from Ohio. I don’t kiss anyone’s ass like him. Ohio needs an ass-kicker, not an ass-kisser”. This is after Trump had joked to a crowd of supporters that, “J.D. is kissing my ass, he wants my support so much.” The race is one more that demonstrates the transformation of the Republican party into a fawning party of Trump. In Ohio, that change could lead to Ohio going Democratic in the upcoming midterms.

Vance became famous for writing his 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which discussed his upbringing, Appalachian values, and, according to the New York Times , gave an insight into why Trump won the election. That early association with Trump was unintentional and yet inspired. While the New York Times saw him as explaining the values that led some people to vote for Trump, Vance has, since then, morphed into a creature of Trump. He is no longer just the voice of people who have been let down by the system. He is now a purveyor of lies, and hate, and part of his job as a Republican leader is to kiss Trump’s ass, and he and Trump, and Ryan, and everyone else, knows it.

Ryan is doing a great job, so far. Ohio has been drifting right, but, with Ryan as candidate, he has Vance in a statistical dead heat . While the race still leans Republican, Vance has draamtically increased his odds of winning by hammering Vance on his extremist views on abortion, same-sex marriage, childlessness, divorce and domestic abuse.
